Blantyre

Arrive at Blantyre's Chileka International Airport and be met by your guide. Your guide will drive you to Game Haven Lodge where you will spend your first night's accommodation.

Blantyre is Malawi’s oldest city and is the commercial capital of Malawi. Set at an altitude of around 1,000 metres Blantyre has a wonderful climate with warm days and cool evenings. The city is surrounded by mountains, which provide a stunning backdrop to this bustling city. Starting life in 1876 Blantyre was a mission station for The Established Church of Scotland and is named after the small Scottish village of ‘Blantyre’ where David Livingstone was born. Set in the heart of Southern Malawi, Blantyre offers visitors all the modern conveniences of a city, including a cinema! Victoria Avenue is set in the Central Business District of Blantyre and is the place to visit for banks, internet and a good curio market. Blantyre City Market is within walking distance of Victoria Avenue and is worth a visit- particularly to the fruit and vegetables area, be ready to bargain and keep your valuables back at the hotel and not on show! A number of community project visits can be organised for your time in Blantyre. Your accommodation will be at Game Haven Lodge.

Game Haven Lodge is found within the beautiful 500 acre Chimwenya Game Park, part of the Shire Highlands and one of Malawi’s last remaining indigenous forests. Just 25 kilometers from Blantyre making it perfect for a countryside getaway within easy access of the city.

Your accommodation is on dinner, bed and breakfast basis

The trip was fantastic. I didn't love that we stayed in a Marriott for 2 nights, I think we could have found a better boutique hotel with more charm especially for the cost. Singita was absolutely incredible, the service exceeded all expectations. I think Dom could have communicated better about transfers and I still don't understand why there were extra costs right before the trip started. But overall, the trip was a trip of a lifetime because of the group and the lovely people of Rwanda.

This was definitely a trip of a lifetime. We were exposed to parts of Central Africa that many may not be fortunate to witness. We met real people and understood some of the challenges faced everyday in Malawi. I always felt safe, well-informed, and comfortable - even on Mount Mulanje! If you want to experience new, put yourself out of your zone and find new soulmates - this is one of the best ways I have found to do it.

We have just travelled in Malawi for 2 weeks with Orbis and it was the best holiday we have ever had. We travelled with our 3 children (age 9, 11 and 13). Orbis created a bespoke itinerary for us as we wanted a combination of adventure, relaxation, community engagement and education. Orbis understood the brief completely and we were able to tick all those boxes and more. Throughout the two weeks we visited tea estates, hiked for three days in the mountains whilst staying in mountain huts, went on safari for three days, visited a school and community projects, and finally stayed in a beautiful island beach lodge. For our children the trip has been life-changing - we have already noticed that they are much more aware of the world and have grown in confidence. Because we were able to immerse ourselves into local Malawi life (we didn’t meet a single other tourist), the children chatted to the locals, made friends, and discovered what life in Malawi is really like. These are memories that will stay with us all forever. Our Orbis guide and driver Ozzie was fantastic - we felt safe and supported at all times, and the planning was sorted to the finest of details. Ozzie chatted to the children brilliantly, and he was incredibly knowledgable about Malawi history, politics and environment. Ozzie genuinely cared that we were having a great time, he looked after us incredibly well, and we will definitely stay in touch. Orbis is a unique company - as a family we feel that we have done something that no other company could pull together, in a country that is challenging, beautiful and unique. But most of all Orbus firmly believes in giving back to the communities they work with and visit. It’s a fully immersive African experience that you can tailor to your interests (our daughters love netball so Orbis arranged for them to play a game at a local school). Thank you to the Orbis team for everything that you did for us - we will be back to Malawi soon and will be telling everyone else to visit too.

This trip, besides being well organized and smooth, was unlike any other I have been on. Loved the educational aspect of this trip and the experts selected were a wealth of knowledge. Any unexpected changes in plans were managed smoothly, urgently and professionally. Our guide for the duration of the trip was wonderful and fun to be around.
