The Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Trek (5 Days) is a popular and relatively straightforward way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, known for its gradual trails and hut accommodations instead of camping. This route takes trekkers through diverse landscapes—from lush rainforest to moorland, alpine desert, and finally the snowy summit zone—while staying at Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo huts along the way. The trek culminates in a nighttime ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, offering a classic and scenic Kilimanjaro experience that is shorter in duration but requires good fitness due to limited acclimatization time.
All entry, conservation, camping/hut, and rescue fees required by the Kilimanjaro National Park Authority are covered, allowing legal access to the mountain.
Experienced, licensed guides accompany you throughout the trek, ensuring safety, navigation, and basic first aid support.
A dedicated team carries your main luggage, prepares meals, and assists with camp logistics, allowing you to focus on trekking.
Overnight stays in shared huts (Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo) along the Marangu Route, offering basic but more comfortable shelter than camping.
Nutritious breakfasts, lunches, and dinners are provided during the trek, designed to maintain your energy at high altitude.
Boiled and filtered water is supplied daily to keep you hydrated throughout the climb.
Pick-up and drop-off between the airport and your hotel usually in Moshi
Typically includes one night before and one night after the trek in a hotel.
Airfare to and from Tanzania is not included and must be arranged separately.

Your trek begins at Marangu Gate (1,870 m) on Mount Kilimanjaro, where you register before entering the lush rainforest. The trail is rich in vegetation and wildlife, offering chances to spot monkeys and colorful birds. After a steady 4–5 hour hike covering about 8 km, you arrive at Mandara Hut (2,700 m). If time allows, you can take a short walk to Maundi Crater for scenic views before settling in for the night.
Leaving the forest behind, you transition into open moorland with unique plants like giant lobelias and senecios. The hike to Horombo Hut (3,720 m) takes about 6–7 hours over 12 km and offers sweeping views of the landscape and Mawenzi Peak. The air becomes thinner, so a slow pace is important as you arrive at this key acclimatization point.
Today’s trek crosses the alpine desert known as the Saddle, a vast and barren stretch between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The hike to Kibo Hut (4,700 m) takes about 5–6 hours over 10 km. Upon arrival, you rest, eat early, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt, as this is your final stop before reaching the top.
You begin your summit attempt around midnight, trekking in darkness and cold conditions toward Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro. Reaching the summit at sunrise is a rewarding experience after a challenging climb. After celebrating briefly, you descend back to Kibo Hut and then continue down to Horombo Hut (3,720 m), making this the longest and most demanding day of the trek.
On the final day, you descend through moorland and back into the rainforest, retracing your path to Marangu Gate. The 5–7 hour hike covers about 20 km and marks the end of your journey on Mount Kilimanjaro, where you receive your summit certificate and celebrate your achievement.
