PLACES WE VISIT:

CHINCHERO (Land of great weavers). located only 45 minutes drive from Cusco,  famous because of its local market, colonial church, and farming terraces. The Inhabitants are mainly indigenous Quechua descendants dedicated mainly to agriculture and weaving. Chinchero produces the best textiles in the region, woven with Andean designs, natural colors, and using ancient traditional tools.

MORAY (Greenhouses). Located at 3,500 m (11,500 ft.),  This stunning archeological site is compound by 4 enormous Roman amphitheater-like circular terraces, each of which has its own irrigation system. Although the purpose of these terraces is unknown, it is believed that the terraces were used as “greenhouses” used for agricultural experimentation, an adaptation of different crops due to the huge difference between each terrace enabling to get different microclimates and plants.

SALT MINES (Salineras). The Salineras have been in this place since pre-Inca times in an impossibly steep mountain slope; the villagers of Maras harvest the salt in more than 3000 thousand ponds using the same technology as their ancestors did. The process takes about a month to place the salty water every day to the pools to later be evaporated until it gets about 10 cm high to be harvested and sent to the local markets.

OLLANTAYTAMBO (Last living Inca Citadel). Located at 94 Km of Cusco, Ollantaytambo is the door to Machu Picchu, surrounded by massive mountains, narrow cobblestone streets, and a beautiful Inca site, is the only city that has been continuously inhabited since Inca times (14th Century), That is why the city is called the last living Inca citadel. At the time of the Spanish Conquest, it was used as a stronghold during the Battle of Ollantaytambo

Great trip thank you. We saw the numerous interesting Inca sites and an alpaca farm, with a very nice buffet lunch. The day was packed with content. Particular thanks to our guide Katya, whose enthusiasm and knowledge seemed to be boundless. She is proud of her beautiful country and heritage, and rightly so. Thanks again for providing this experience.

The company did an outstanding job getting our group through 4 days of hiking. The breakfast, lunch, and dinners they served were unexpectedly very good and plentiful. Sleeping inside the tents was made comfortable with foam and air mattresses along with sleeping bags and pillows. Unfortunately the government is in charge of the bathroom facilities which were pretty bad, they only had flour toilets and in some cases they were quite dirty, not the fault of the company. A lot of the companies that use the Inka trail don't properly pasteurized the drinking water many hikers get diarrhea so bring anti-diarrhea medicine and consider bringing something that can filter the bacteria our of the drinking water they provide. I think I was the only one in my group who got diarrhea, fortunately I brought medicine with me and I started using my filter once it started. Fortunately it only lasted two days and it wasn't bad. The floors of one bathroom facility was covered in diarrhea by another company's group by the time we got there, that was pretty bad. There was only one cold shower facility available at the end of the third day hiking, however, all the bathrooms at the camping sites have large sinks which you can use to at least wash your hair and face. I packed baby wipes, which worked well at cleaning the rest of me and that I used to when I went #2. We saw so many archeological sites along the 4 days hiking, it was amazing. I would definitely do this hike again but would use filter/straw that removes bacteria from the drinking water they provide. Also it's very important to be in Cusco (or high altitude town) at least 3 days before the hike to get acclimated to the altitude. Taking one aspirin (325 mg) and one ginkgo biloba (120 mg) per day starting one week before you arrive at high altitudes towns like Cusco (11,000 ft above sea level) and throughout your stay will help prevent altitude sickness (headaches, nausea, etc). Bring rain gear and use the plastic poncho they provide. My rain gear didn't work that well but the poncho did.
