About this trip

The 3-Day Sahara Desert Tour from Marrakech To Erg Chigaga is the most exciting tour for travelers with only three days available who want a unique and comprehensive desert experience. On this trip, you are far away in the dunes, far from any impression of civilization.

Your Marrakech To Erg Chigaga starts by being picked up from your hotel or Riad in Marrakech at 8:00 am to head south for the magnificent High Atlas Mountains. You cross the Tizin-Tichka pass, (2660m) the highest pass in North Africa. You will be amazed by the panoramas and will want to take memorable photos. Simply tell your driver where you want to stop.

Along the way, you will visit the former presidential palace, Kasbah Telouet, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou. These are the two most famous kasbahs in Morocco and an essential part of any desert tour. Before arriving in Ouarzazate, you can visit the Atlas Film Studios, and see the sets of many Hollywood films still in place here.

That night, you will have the thrill of spending the night in a traditional rural riad or an authentic guesthouse in Agdez, a small town just at the head of the Dra'a valley, which descends towards the desert. From there, you get the distinct impression that you are on your way to a different world - new, exciting, and oriental. With a local guide to explain the history, you have the option of visiting the largest of the hundreds of Kasbahs in the valley, namely Kasbah Tamnougalt.

From there, the thrill increases as you pull off the road through the Draa Valley, past ancient kasbahs and lush green oases. This is part of the old route of the caravans that carried goods from Mali and Niger after crossing the Sahara for days.

After reaching the largest city before the Sahara, Zagora, you will have the opportunity to visit the cooperative of the famous nationwide green pottery and the Koranic library with its magnificent manuscripts, have this cutting edge experience to ride a camel in the dunes of Erg Chegaga

At night under the astonishing array of stars, you will sleep in a comfortable luxury camp in the desert at the foot of the largest dunes of the Sahara in Morocco. The next day, the wonder continues as you drive off-road in the Sahara Desert, hunt for fossils in the dry lake of Iriqui, and learn about Berber carpet-making techniques in Taznakht.

Itinerary

Atlas Mountains
MARRAKECH – ATLAS MOUNTAINS – KASBAH AIT BEN HADOU – OUAR

Your early departure for the Marrakech To Erg Chigaga desert trip is 8 hours from your hotel or riad in Marrakech to cross the High Atlas Mountains. After the Tichka pass, you leave the main road and take a secondary road to the Kasbah of Telouet, which belonged to the lords of the Atlas, the Glaoui family. Each addition to the building is today in ruins exposed to the wind and the rain, having been abandoned and looted after the fled of the last pasha of the country. Wait to be pleasantly surprised by the traditional interior decoration as you reach the far end of the Kasbah. From there you drive along the beautiful and awe-inspiring Ounila Valley, full of bends in the roads, surprises by the hues of the rock and soil, Berber villages and gardens, as well as smaller Kasbahs. Almost at the end of the road, you reach Aït Ben Haddou, where you stop for a delicious lunch. It is Morocco’s most famous Kasbah, one of Morocco’s seven UNESCO World Heritage sites. The architectural style is well preserved also the earthen constructions are perfectly adapted to the climatic conditions and in harmony with the natural and social environment. Probably from the 17th century, it is also famous as the backdrop for many Hollywood blockbusters. In the afternoon ,You will be transferred to your Guesthouse ou pool and dinner and breakfast

One word. Absolutely stunning experience. Highly recommended. Khalil himself who manages the company came with us and he knows the area so well. All the days we were at remote locations with footsteps free dunes. We had a stunning experience…

My sister and her partner had a great time on this trip (I booked it for them, hence this review based on my meeting their guide at the start in Fes, and on their very positive comments to me afterwards in Marrakesh). Their guide Mohamed picked them up at exactly the time and place agreed upon, which is something of a rarity in Morocco! He has an excellent command of English along with kind and courteous manners, i.e. he's a gem. Being from the south, in exactly the area that the tour highlights was a huge plus: Mohamed could spot a falcon that was just a speck to them, and a desert lizard crossing the road that was practically invisible. The further into the desert they went, he knew and waved to people in passing in the middle of nowhere with astonishing regularity. The camps were tucked among the dunes so that only at the top of a dune did they have the sense that anyone else was there and they said their nights there among the stars were magical. Accommodations were excellent. On their return to Marrakesh, Mohamed stayed in close contact by phone with the riad manager to be sure that their return was smooth and I could meet up with them again without concern. Finally, I have to give a shout out to Khalil, the owner of DesertBrise: his communication with me as I was deciding on a tour company and after I decided to make the booking was clear, detailed, positive and friendly. When hopefully I come back to Morocco, I look forward to meeting Khalil in person to book another tour.

My partner and I did the three day trip from Marrakech to Erg Chigaga with DesertBrise Travel. Originally, we planned to just do a group tour but switched to a private tour the day before and it was an excellent choice. My partner and I have traveled to many different places in the world and this tour was magical. We say villages, beautiful mountains covered with snow, a hidden gem of a Kasbah, the Sahara, and Erg Chigaga. This was certainly the best tour we have ever done in our life. Our driver Mohamad was incredibly skilled at driving, navigation, and spoke excellent English. We was also a great guide giving us tips about Morocco, telling us about the culture, and picking out great view points for pictures. He is from the Sahara and knows the region like the back of his hand. He was able to guide us through the Sahara with no GPS, map, or hesitation. I was beyond impressed and aspire to one day have as great of a sense of direction and driving skill as Mohamad. If you are a photographer, this trip is stellar for photography. The landscapes you will travel through are some of the most spectacular sights. Being from Colorado, I grew up in the mountains but was still stunned by the sights. The sand dunes were probably my favorite natural landscapes I have ever photographed as well. If I could give this trip more than 5 stars I absolutely would. If you are thinking about whether you should do a desert trip or not while you are in Morocco, I will give you the answer right now... YES DO IT! My only regret from the trip is I wish I would have gone for even more days. The desert is incredible and DesertBrise helped make our trip a once-in-a-lifetime travel opportunity.

We can recommend desertbrise-travel.com as a local, experienced and reliable provider for a desert trek. We were on a wonderful 4 day camel trek, walking in different types of desert starting from M’Hamid. Our guides took good care of us, providing insight of the landscape, good food and warm conversations by the fire, and we and the children became friendly with our three camels. Absolutely recommendable.

My husband and I had a great, privat 22-day Grand Tour of Morocco. It was our first trip to Morocco. After contacting Khalil (DesertBrise) with a possible route and places we wanted to see, he made some good suggestions and then organized the whole trip (driver, car, riads/hotels, desert camps, guides, balloon ride, meals). Everything worked perfectly. We had Yousf as our driver for the whole trip. He spoke excellent English and had very good knowledge of the places we visited and areas we drove through. His driving was excellent and the Toyota Prada was in good shape and much appreciated in the desert areas. I would recommend a 4x4 high clearance car for all trips to the desert. We requested to stay in riads or desert camps where possible and Khalil booked accordingly. We were often surprised by a very plain looking door at the end of a small alley. When we entered the riad there was a beautiful court yard often with a fountain and greenery. The tents in the desert camps in Merzouga are quite luxurious and those in Erg Chigaga are more simple. It was great to spend some nights out among the dunes. Of all the places we visited we liked the cities/towns Marrakech, Fes, Taroudant and Chefchaouen and the areas Merzouga (sand dunes), Erg Chigaga (sand dunes), Anti Atlas mountains, Todra gorges and Dades valley the best. The off road drive through the rocky desert and then the sand dunes of Erg Chigaga was definitely a highlight. Do not miss a visit to a large market with fruits, vegetables, live animals, 2nd hand cloths etc. We were not so impressed by the coast and the balloon ride in Marrakesh (safe but not much to see). We would definitely book with DesertBrise again. Thank-you Khalil and Yousf for a great trip
