About this trip

Start your day with some of the most fabulous views over the western Andean slopes. You'll be pick-up from your hotel at 4:30 am. We'll head out to an area which is known among birders as the “Mashpi road”, the birding area includes a small side road that forks off and heads a few km to the Mashpi Amagusa Reserve.

Mashpi is a recently popularized site in the northwestern foothills that has gained notoriety for its impressive collection of Chocó endemic bird species. The wet mossy forest along the roads in the area boasts Moss-Backed Tanager, Pacific Tuftedcheek, Orange-Breasted Fruiteater, Black Solitaire, Glistening-Green Tanager, Indigo Flowerpiercer, and the very rare Choco Vireo.

Time and space will take on a different meaning as you become immersed in the deep green forest, exploring pristine landscapes.

After a delicious lunch, you'll start your way back to Quito but there is another amazing place to visit: Alambi Cloud Forest Reserve. This is one of the best places in Ecuador to watch hummingbirds at close range. Up to 14 species have been recorded in less than 30 minutes in this reserve. You'll be amazed by the beauty of these winged jewels.

Add-on option: Cock of the Rock LEK

In the afternoon you can add a visit to a  LEK of one of the most iconic  bird species in the cloud forest; The  Andean Cock of the Rock. This  species exhibits marked sexual dimorphism, the male has a large  disk-like crest and a very unique vivid scarlet plumage. Gatherings of  males compete for breeding females  with each male displaying  its colorful plumage, bobbing and hopping,  and making strident calls.
If you take this trip extension you'll be dropped off  in your hotel around 6:30  - 7 pm.

We are a family of entrepreneurs passionate for nature and our charming country Ecuador. We provide personalized top-notch services with a wide variety of tours through some of the most amazing destinations in Ecuador. Neotropical Nature & Birding Trips is an initiative to promote sustainable development in fragile and threatened ecosystems in Ecuador through ecotourism, education, birding, photography and research; by supporting locally managed ecotourism projects, supporting long term conservation in the zones of influence through low impact activities for the ecosystems. We strongly believe that responsible tourism is a powerful tool to resist the pressure of the wrong exploitation of natural resources and at the same time promoting the well-being of the people and their cultures, with positive impact in the living quality of the local communities where we operate our trips.

One of the best birding experiences we have ever had. Our guide, Santiago Salazar, took us to many local places that only he knew about where we could see spectacular bird species many of which were endemic. Every day we had a different target and each day we saw that target from the San Isidro Owl to the Sword-bill Hummingbird. Accommodation and food at Sani Lodge, Wild Sumaco and San Isidro were excellent and we were made very welcome. All locations were good but we would have to say that the highlight was Sani Lodge in the Amazon., just magic. We visited the 35 metre tower beside a Sabre Tree to reach the large platform at the top of the tree where we recorded fifty different bird species including the endangered Crested Eagle. All told we recorded over 250 species and had a fantastic experience.
Very nice ship, great staff, great program, excellent food. Highly recommended.
Wonderful days with a lot of amazing nature encounters. Our very skilled, passionate and interesting guide Santiago Molina did a great job! We saw 4 Andean bears, tayra, olinguito and an overwhelming diversity of birds. We learned a lot and will always remember this experience. Great service by Neotropical.
