About this trip

Start your day with some of the most fabulous views over the western Andean slopes. You'll be pick-up from your hotel at 4:30 am. We'll head out to an area which is known among birders as the “Mashpi road”, the birding area includes a small side road that forks off and heads a few km to the Mashpi Amagusa Reserve.

Mashpi is a recently popularized site in the northwestern foothills that has gained notoriety for its impressive collection of Chocó endemic bird species. The wet mossy forest along the roads in the area boasts Moss-Backed Tanager, Pacific Tuftedcheek, Orange-Breasted Fruiteater, Black Solitaire, Glistening-Green Tanager, Indigo Flowerpiercer, and the very rare Choco Vireo.

Time and space will take on a different meaning as you become immersed in the deep green forest, exploring pristine landscapes.

After a delicious lunch, you'll start your way back to Quito but there is another amazing place to visit: Alambi Cloud Forest Reserve. This is one of the best places in Ecuador to watch hummingbirds at close range. Up to 14 species have been recorded in less than 30 minutes in this reserve. You'll be amazed by the beauty of these winged jewels.

Add-on option: Cock of the Rock LEK

In the afternoon you can add a visit to a  LEK of one of the most iconic  bird species in the cloud forest; The  Andean Cock of the Rock. This  species exhibits marked sexual dimorphism, the male has a large  disk-like crest and a very unique vivid scarlet plumage. Gatherings of  males compete for breeding females  with each male displaying  its colorful plumage, bobbing and hopping,  and making strident calls.
If you take this trip extension you'll be dropped off  in your hotel around 6:30 pm.

Our birdwatching tour through the Antisana highlands and park was the perfect finale to our Ecuador vacation. Santiago has an expert level of knowledge of all of the local species both by eye and ear which enabled us to ultimately view many bird species that we would have otherwise passed by. We were able to ultimately see a pair of Andean Condors to finish the tour, and recommend this tour to any wildlife, bird, or park enthusiast coming through Quito with a day to spare.

Our Mindo tour was wonderful. Santiago is an outstanding birdwatching guide, and his local knowledge really made the tour exceptional. I recommend this full day tour and the cock-of the rock add-on for any birdwatchers coming through the Mindo or Quito area. Great day!

This is my second visit to Zuro Loma and, again, it was brilliant. There is always constant action, from hummers to flowerpiercers to guans to ant pittas. The team at Zuro Loma are very attentive to the feeders and the action. They really try to make the visit as fruitful as possible for twitchers and photographers. Neotropical Nature and Birding Trips were, as always outstanding. Santiago is a great guide and of tremendous help in getting the best shots. Gabriela, in the office, is a model of kindness, flexibility and efficiency. I recommend this company with complete confidence to any birder visiting the neotropics.

Great trip! Gaby and Santiago did a great job of sorting out our itinerary (at short notice); arrangements went smoothly in Ecuador - we didn't see any trouble at all!! As ever the birds, wildlife and scenery didn't disappoint - even though this was our fourth trip we still managed to get a number of 'lifers'. Most memorable moment (amongst many) was 'hanging' off a cliff at 13000+ feet waiting for condors to fly, which they did - and watching a spectacled bear eating it's breakfast! Thank you Santiago and Gaby for organising the trip
