About your trip

This Unique Ocean Expeditions adventure combines the best of two completely different underwater worlds — the vibrant coral reefs of Cozumel and the mystical freshwater cenotes of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula.

Over the course of five incredible days, you’ll experience both ocean and cavern diving in one seamless itinerary that caters to beginners and seasoned divers alike. It’s an ideal mix of adventure, learning, and pure underwater magic — finished off with the unforgettable chance to swim alongside the world’s largest fish, the majestic whale shark.

The trip begins in Cozumel, where you’ll spend three days exploring the island’s famous drift dives along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Here, beginner divers can build confidence in warm, clear water while learning to handle mild currents and fine-tune their buoyancy. It’s also the perfect environment to gain experience toward your PADI Advanced Open Water certification or try Nitrox for the first time. Experienced divers, meanwhile, will appreciate Cozumel’s effortless flow — soaring along dramatic walls like Palancar and Santa Rosa while spotting turtles, eagle rays, and the endemic splendid toadfish.

After three days of ocean diving, we’ll switch gears and head inland to the cenotes, natural sinkholes formed by collapsed limestone that reveal an entirely new world beneath the jungle.

The cenote dives on this expedition are introductory-level cavern dives, designed for those new to this type of diving, but still impressive enough to leave even advanced divers in awe. Crystal-clear freshwater, sunbeams slicing through the openings, and surreal rock formations create a truly otherworldly experience. It’s calm, meditative diving — the perfect complement to Cozumel’s current-swept reefs.

To top it all off, we’ll end the expedition with a snorkel encounter with whale sharks, the gentle giants that migrate through the region’s warm waters each year. Floating alongside these enormous creatures is one of the most humbling and awe-inspiring experiences in the ocean.

Altogether, this expedition offers a rare balance — fun, relaxed, and educational for new divers, yet still packed with world-class diving and adventure for those with more experience.

From colorful coral walls to cathedral-like caverns and the open blue with whale sharks, it’s a journey that captures the full spirit of exploration that defines Unique Ocean Expeditions.

COZUMEL SCUBA DIVING

Here our adventure begins, Scuba Diving in Cozumel is a bit like jumping straight into a tropical aquarium that never ends. The island sits off Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, surrounded by warm Caribbean water so clear it feels like you’re floating in glass. Cozumel’s main attraction is the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second largest in the world — and it delivers some of the most vibrant coral walls anywhere. You drift effortlessly along massive drop-offs like Palancar, Columbia, and Santa Rosa, watching schools of angelfish and parrotfish flash through sunlight that filters down like stained glass. The currents do most of the work, making it one of the easiest — and most relaxing — styles of diving around.

This is also one of Unique Ocean Expeditions’ trips that beginner divers can join. It’s the perfect destination to build confidence and experience diving in gentle to moderate currents, learning the art of drift diving, and gaining the skills needed for more advanced adventures ahead. Cozumel offers an ideal setting for guests to work toward their PADI Advanced Open Water certification or experience diving with Nitrox for the first time. Every dive here becomes both an incredible experience and a valuable lesson — preparing you for the more challenging and remote expeditions we offer in the future.

Cozumel is also known for its marine life encounters. You can spot hawksbill turtles on almost every dive, southern stingrays gliding across sandy patches, and the occasional splendid toadfish — a species found only here. The deeper walls attract eagle rays and black groupers, while the shallow reefs offer playful patches full of lobster, moray eels, and colorful sponges. Night dives are especially spectacular, when octopus and basket stars come out, and bioluminescence twinkles in the dark water.

What’s nice is how accessible everything is. Dive operators are everywhere, the boats are efficient, and even beginners can enjoy world-class diving right off the coast. Yet it still appeals to seasoned divers chasing the thrill of fast drifts and deep walls. Add in the island’s laid-back vibe — a mix of authentic Mexican culture, beach bars, and taco stands — and Cozumel strikes the perfect balance between serious diving and easy living.

Whether you’re logging your tenth dive or your thousandth, it’s one of those rare places that always reminds you why you fell in love with the ocean in the first place.

THE CENOTES SCUBA DIVING

A "cenote" is a natural sinkhole created where a cave ceiling has collapsed. The Mayan considered cenotes to be an entrance to their "underworld" where their gods live and their spirits reside after death.

A combination of geologic events and climatic change has led to the development of these unique ecosystems.

Millions of years ago, the Yucatan peninsula was a giant reef set under several feet of ocean water. During the last ice age, the ocean level dropped (water levels were approximately 300 feet lower than their present day levels), exposing the reef to the surface.

The coral died, and jungle grew over the mile thick limestone platform created by the coral reef. Massive cave systems were formed, inside the caves the geological formations such as stalactites hang from the cave's ceiling, and stalagmites, which extend upwards from the cavern floor. Many of the caverns eventually collapsed and when the Ice Age came to a close 18,000 years ago, the climate of the planet warmed up, the glaciers receded, and the caves flooded as sea levels rose.

Carbon dating of artifacts found in some area caves shows them to have been visited by humans over 9,000 years ago.

WHALESHARKS

Whalesharks are the largest fish in the ocean, yet they are gentle, slow-moving filter feeders that pose no threat to humans.

Despite their size, they feed primarily on plankton and small fish, often swimming calmly near the surface. Encountering a whale shark in the wild is a powerful reminder of how vast, peaceful, and extraordinary the ocean can be.

Swimming with whale sharks in Cancún is one of the most awe-inspiring wildlife encounters in the ocean.

Each year, typically from May through June, these gentle giants gather off Cancún, Isla Mujeres, and Holbox to feed on plankton near the surface. Entering the water beside the world’s largest fish is both humbling and exhilarating, as they glide effortlessly just inches away.

The experience is conducted by licensed operators with strict guidelines to ensure respectful, low-impact encounters. Warm water, good visibility, and the sheer size and grace of the whale sharks make this a true bucket-list adventure.

STAYING IN PLAYA DEL CARMEN

Staying in Playa del Carmen is the perfect base for exploring both Cozumel and the wider Yucatán diving region. This lively coastal town sits right across the channel from Cozumel — just a short boat ride away — making it the most convenient spot to access the island’s world-class reefs without actually staying on the island itself. From Playa, you can wake up in a Luxury Hotel or comfortable air bnb/boutique apartment, enjoy a good coffee on the beach, and still be boarding a dive boat in Cozumel by mid-morning. It’s an easy, flexible setup that fits perfectly with the relaxed rhythm of a Unique Ocean Expeditions trip.

For divers, Playa del Carmen is strategically placed. Not only is Cozumel right across the water, but some of the Yucatán’s most spectacular cenotes are less than an hour’s drive away. This means you can enjoy both the ocean’s vibrant reefs and the jungle’s mysterious freshwater caverns without ever having to change hotels. Add in easy access to the whale shark excursions from nearby Isla Mujeres during the season, and Playa becomes the ideal launch point for a multi-adventure diving expedition.

In short, Playa del Carmen is more than just a convenient stop — it’s the perfect hub for comfort, fun, and flexibility. Whether you’re a beginner diver learning the ropes or a seasoned pro chasing variety, staying here puts you right at the heart of everything that makes diving in this part of Mexico so special.

LUXURY PACKAGE - MAHEKAL BEACH RESORT

Staying at Mahekal Beachfront Resort is our luxury package option, offering a perfect balance of comfort, location, relaxed Caribbean charm all while being looked after with excellent hotel service. Rooms are comfortable and well appointed, with many just steps from the sand and ocean breeze.

One of Mahekal’s biggest strengths is its location — close enough to Fifth Avenue to easily walk into town for restaurants, shops, and nightlife, yet far enough away to feel peaceful and uncrowded.

After days spent diving cenotes or heading over to Cozumel, it’s an ideal place to unwind by the pool, enjoy sunset drinks on the beach, or simply relax to the sound of the waves. It’s a welcoming, easygoing base that guests consistently enjoy.

TRAVEL AND FLIGHT ESSENTIALS

Your journey begins with an international flight to Cancún International Airport (CUN), the main gateway to Mexico’s Riviera Maya.

Cancún is served by numerous major airlines, including American Airlines, United, Delta, Air Canada, British Airways, Air France, and many others, with direct flights from cities across the US, Canada, Europe, and Latin America.

Upon arrival in Cancún, Playa del Carmen is approximately a 45–60 minute drive south, and transfers can be arranged by private shuttle or taxi.

We recommend arriving at least 24 hours before the start of the expedition to allow for flight delays, baggage collection, and time to settle in before activities begin.

Visa & Entry Requirements

For US, Canadian, EU, UK, Australian, and New Zealand passport holders, no visa is required for tourist stays of up to 180 days. Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay, and proof of onward or return travel may be requested on entry.

The local currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN), though credit cards are widely accepted in Playa del Carmen, hotels, restaurants, and dive centers.

COMFORT PACKAGE - AIR BNB / BOUTIQUE APT

Staying in an Airbnb or boutique apartment in Playa del Carmen is our comfort package option, offering guests extra space, privacy, and flexibility while still being close to the action.

These apartments are carefully selected to be clean, modern, and well located, often within walking distance of the beach, restaurants, and Fifth Avenue. They provide a relaxed home-base feel, which many guests appreciate after long days of diving in cenotes or traveling to Cozumel.

This option is ideal for guests who enjoy a quieter setting, more room to spread out, and the freedom to come and go on their own schedule.

Having a kitchen or kitchenette also adds convenience for light meals, snacks, and early mornings. Comfortable, practical, and well situated, this accommodation style blends independence with the ease of being part of a group expedition.
