This will be our second annual “Michigan in May” excursion on the Colonial Crafts! This year, we are charting a premier route between Chicago and Pontiac (Detroit). In 2028, our third annual “Michigan in May” trip will be on the Amtrak “Blue Water” route to beautiful Port Huron, the "Maritime Capital of the Great Lakes" including the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse, the boyhood home of Thomas Edison, and the gateway to Sarnia, Ontario.
Your adventure begins in Pontiac, where the Colonial Crafts is coupled to the rear of Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited. After enjoying the breathtaking scenery up the Hudson Valley, you will enjoy a full-course dinner with white-jacket service on the historic route of the 20th Century Limited. Once you arrive in Chicago, you can catch a Cubs game, visit world-class museums, or enjoy the city's many fine restaurants.
Leaving Chicago, we cross Michigan on our way to Pontiac. There are many attractions for you to enjoy in the Detroit area. We recommend a sample itinerary including the Tigers at Comerica Park, the Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village, the Ford Rouge Factory Tour, and the Giant Screen Experience. You can explore the newly restored Michigan Central train station or enjoy a meal at the beautiful Renaissance Center’s. Cross the border and visit the city of Windsor, Canada. If you need a vehicle, rental cars are available near the Detroit, Troy, and Royal Oak station stops.
Guests can tailor this trip as they desire: get on or off the train at any Amtrak station between Chicago and Pontiac. The pricing for each segment remains the same regardless of where you board or disembark. If you purchase a one-way ticket, you can easily coordinate the other half of your journey via Amtrak or airplane.
Your ticket price includes all of your meals, along with hors d'oeuvres, snacks, and beverages. Overnight trip segments include your own private bedroom and bathroom. Enjoy historic luxury with personal care by our on-board servers. Passengers who purchase tickets involving an overnight segment will be assigned one of our four private rooms. Each room features an upper and lower berth and an attached private bathroom with a toilet and sink. Our on-board staff makes up each room for daytime travel with comfortable chairs, then folds them away to turn down the bunks while you are at dinner. Whether you are traveling alone or with a friend, you must purchase two tickets to reserve a private room. An all-stainless steel shower room is available at the end of the hallway for use at any time. Your ticket also grants you access to the Amtrak VIP lounge in Chicago to ensure your journey is comfortable from start to finish.

We operate a historic railcar that's available for use throughout the United States. We offer scheduled and chartered vintage railway travel experiences. The Colonial Crafts was built in 1949 for the Pennsylvania Railroad. It has four bedrooms, each with a private bathroom. There is a shower at the end of the hall, a small kitchen, and a very large lounge area that comfortably seats 20 people during daytime travel. Your journey includes all meals and beverages served by our professional staff including a Porter, Steward, and Chef. The Pullman Company assigned this car to Elvis Presley in 1960 after he returned from military service overseas. He used the car to travel from New Jersey to Graceland, and then on to Los Angeles where he completed filming his movie, “G. I. Blues”.
