Escape the city crowds for a scenic day trip into the cool, green Middle Atlas Mountains. This full-day journey takes you through a landscape of alpine-style towns, tranquil lakes, and ancient woodlands. Highlights include exploring the European-style streets of Ifrane (Morocco’s "Little Switzerland"), walking through Africa's largest cedar forest near Azrou to meet and feed the wild Barbary macaque monkeys, and discovering traditional Berber culture in quiet mountain villages.
Depart Fez: 09:20 AM Your day begins with a morning pick-up from your accommodation in Fez as we set off toward the refreshing landscapes of the Middle Atlas Mountains. Our scenic drive first takes us past Immouzer, a charming hillside town noted for its French-influenced architecture. Here, we will pause to visit traditional troglodyte cave dwellings, offering a unique glimpse into the region's historic lifestyle and culture.
Discover "Little Switzerland" Winding through breathtaking mountain vistas, we arrive in Ifrane. Known for its alpine-style chalets, manicured gardens, and neat, tree-lined boulevards, Ifrane offers a striking contrast to the traditional medinas. You will have an hour of free time to explore this unique town, capture beautiful photographs, and enjoy the crisp mountain air.
Ancient Forests & Wildlife Leaving Ifrane, we will make a brief stop to view the fascinating local fossils for which this region is famous. From there, we journey deep into the ancient cedar forest to visit the Cèdre Gouraud. Though this iconic, 800-year-old giant is no longer living, it still stands tall over the forest floor. In this area, you will have the chance to meet, feed, and photograph the playful native Barbary macaque monkeys.
Lunch in Azrou & Return Our final destination is Azrou, a vibrant Berber market town framed by dramatic limestone hills. You will have time to relax over a leisurely lunch, explore the town's artisan heritage, and take in the panoramic views. Our mountain journey concludes with a relaxing, scenic drive back to Fez, arriving in the late afternoon.
