About this trip

Yoga and meditation retreat with ISHTA senior teacher Sheila Miller and Lama Phurbu Tashi Rinpoche of the Gampopa Center in one of the most beautiful places in the world: the Lofoten Islands in Norway. This volcanic archipelago lies north of the Arctic Circle, and combines breathtaking mountain scenery with a temperate coastal climate.

We have rented a small villa in a tiny fishing village with immediate access to the beach, hiking, and outdoor space.  We will be there at the height of summer, in time to experience the midnight sun.

The natural, unencumbered state of our minds is clarity.  To alleviate suffering in ourselves and others, we cultivate the ability to see the world as it is.  In Norway we will retreat from the usual patterns of our daily lives to encourage viveka, the clear perception of reality. In the light-filled, resplendent landscape of the Lofoten Islands, we will cultivate viveka through daily yoga practice, dharma talks and an engagement with the natural world.

Immerse yourself in this sublime environment, while you replenish your own inner light.

Before You Go

This is a rare chance to visit an off-the-beaten path wonderland, and you might wish to stay a few extra days.  You can expect temperate weather, but do be sure to pack an extra sweater and a rain slicker, and whatever else will help you be comfortable outdoors.  We'll be right next to the beach--so bring a swimsuit and/or wetsuit!  The house has curtains, but an eye mask is advisable if you're sensitive to light when sleeping.  And don't forget your camera!
