A Journey of Culture, Craft & Kings

There are places we visit, and then there are places that become part of who we are. For me, India is one of those places.

After 18 journeys to India, what continues to draw me back is not only its extraordinary beauty, but its people. Over the years, I have been welcomed into homes, formed lasting friendships with artisans, guides and local families, and discovered experiences that simply aren't found in a guidebook. It is these connections, together with my passion for India's rich heritage, that have inspired this very special tour.

I invite you to join me on A Journey of Culture, Craft & Kings—an immersive small-group experience through the heart of northern and western India, where magnificent architecture, vibrant markets, living traditions and warm hospitality come together to create memories that will stay with you long after you've returned home.

This tour has been thoughtfully curated to balance India's iconic landmarks with authentic local experiences. We'll wander bustling bazaars, explore magnificent palaces and forts, enjoy heritage accommodation, meet talented craftspeople in their workshops, savour regional cuisine, and share moments with the people who make India so unforgettable.

As your host, I'll be travelling alongside you throughout the journey, supported by experienced local guides, sharing the stories, places and friendships that have made India such an important part of my life.

What makes this journey particularly special is that my support begins long before we arrive in India. From the moment you book, right through to the end of our journey, I'll be there to answer your questions, help you prepare, ease any concerns and make sure you feel supported every step of the way. I want you to feel confident and excited about your adventure, knowing you have someone you can turn to whenever you need guidance or reassurance.

My hope is that you'll leave not only with beautiful photographs and treasured purchases, but with a genuine understanding of India's incredible culture and the heartfelt connections that make travel so rewarding.

Whether this is your first visit to India or you've long dreamed of returning, I look forward to welcoming you on a journey that celebrates culture, craftsmanship, history and human connection.

  • Tonight, we’ll gather for our final dinner together, sharing stories, laughter and favourite memories from our journey.

A love of India and a journey shared from the heart.

I’m Jess, founder of Monsoon Desert Treasures and Travel. Having travelled to India 18 times, my love for this extraordinary country goes far beyond its magnificent palaces, vibrant markets and beautiful landscapes. It’s the friendships I’ve formed, the people I’ve met and the experiences I’ve shared that keep drawing me back.

Through my travels and many years of involvement with an NGO in India, I’ve built meaningful connections with local families and artisans. I’m passionate about discovering traditional crafts, hearing the stories behind them and sharing the warmth, culture and hidden gems of the India I know and love.

My aim is to create personal, meaningful journeys that go beyond the usual tourist trail, bringing you closer to the people, traditions and experiences that make India so special.

I can’t wait to share this remarkable country with you.

I have never been to India before, what can i expect?

After 18 visits, my love for India has only grown, and I can’t wait to share it with you! India is a feast for the senses, full of colour, fascinating culture, beautiful people and unexpected discoveries. It can feel busy and overwhelming at times, but you won’t be navigating it alone. I'll be travelling alongside you throughout the journey, supported by experienced local guides, sharing my knowledge, personal connections and experiences to help you feel comfortable and make the most of your journey.

I’ve carefully designed this tour to include time to rest and recharge, alongside some truly special experiences and hidden gems you might not find on an average tour. My aim is to help you experience a more personal side of India, connect with its people and culture, and feel confident embracing the adventure at your own pace.

Most of all, I hope you’ll fall in love with India just as I have!

How many people will be on the tour?

This is a small, intimate group tour with a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 8 travellers. You will always have someone with experience with you throughout the journey: myself, Jess, and wonderful local guides whom I’ve known and trusted for more than a decade.

We’ll travel together in a small bus, giving us the flexibility to take our time, make spontaneous stops and explore interesting places we discover along the way.

For me, travelling in India is about so much more than visiting famous sights. It’s about immersing ourselves in the country, connecting with its people and culture, and embracing those unexpected moments that often become the most treasured memories. A small group allows us to experience India in a more personal, relaxed and meaningful way.

From character-filled stays to the people we meet along the way, every detail is carefully considered to create a journey that feels personal, meaningful and a little different.

  • BEYOND THE ORDINARY

For me, India is about so much more than seeing the sights. It’s about the people, the stories, the traditions and the unexpected moments that bring a place to life. Through personal connections and trusted local relationships, we’ll meet artisans, families and communities, discovering a side of India that many travellers never get to experience.

  • CHARACTERFUL STAYS & INCREDIBLE FOOD

Stay in hand-picked boutique and heritage properties that reflect the character and spirit of India. And, of course, there’s the food, from delicious local favourites and regional specialities to some truly memorable dining experiences.

All the important details are taken care of, from airport transfers to our accommodation, many included meals, entrance fees and experiences listed in the day by day itinerary. With trusted local guides and carefully planned logistics, I'll take care of the included tour arrangements so you can focus on enjoying your journey. I can even help guide you through the visa application process (at an additional fee).

With a small group, the freedom to be flexible and room for those unexpected discoveries, you can relax, embrace the adventure and experience India with confidence.

What Travel documentation will I need?

You’ll need a valid passport with at least six months’ validity from your departure date from India, along with an approved Indian tourist visa. Australian passport holders can generally apply for an e-Tourist Visa online through the official Indian government website. You’ll also need to complete India’s online e-Arrival Card within 72 hours before arrival.

I highly recommend carrying printed copies of your visa approval, travel insurance details, flight information and a copy of your passport, as well as keeping digital copies safely stored.

Please ensure your documentation is organised before departure. I’ll provide guidance as we get closer to the tour, so you know what you need and feel prepared for your journey.

Do I need Travel Insurance?

Yes, comprehensive travel insurance is compulsory for all travellers joining my tour. You will not be able to participate in the tour without it, and you must provide me with proof of your insurance at least 60 days before departure.

Your policy should cover overseas medical expenses, hospital treatment, emergency medical evacuation, trip cancellations, delays and lost or stolen belongings. Please ensure your cover is valid for the entire duration of your trip and declare any pre-existing medical conditions to your insurer.

I want you to travel with confidence and peace of mind, knowing you’re well prepared for the unexpected and free to enjoy all the wonderful experiences India has to offer.

What level of fitness is required?

This tour is suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of general fitness and mobility. You don’t need to be particularly athletic, but you should be comfortable walking for periods of time, exploring historic sites, and navigating uneven surfaces, steps and stairs.

India’s heat can also be a factor, particularly when exploring forts, palaces and outdoor sites. Being comfortable walking in warmer conditions, staying hydrated and taking things at a steady pace will help you enjoy the experience. I’ve built in time to rest and recharge, balancing our adventures with some well-deserved downtime.

My aim is for you to feel comfortable and supported throughout the journey, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy India at a relaxed pace without feeling rushed.

Do i require vaccinations before i go?

Everyone’s health needs are different, so I encourage you to have a chat with your GP or a travel health clinic at least three months before departure. They can offer advice tailored to you, review your vaccination history and let you know if any vaccinations or other health precautions are recommended for India.

I want you to feel prepared and confident before we set off on our adventure, so please give yourself plenty of time to organise any health requirements before departure.

What will the weather be like?

We’ll be travelling in September, a lovely shoulder-season time to explore India. The monsoon is beginning to wind down, meaning we can enjoy fewer crowds at many sights and, particularly across Rajasthan’s arid landscapes, beautiful green scenery following the recent rains.

You can expect warm to hot days, with temperatures often around 30–36°C, warm evenings and the possibility of occasional rain. Lightweight, breathable clothing, a hat, sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes will help you stay comfortable while exploring.

I love this time of year because the landscape can look so different after the monsoon, offering a wonderful contrast to the Rajasthan many people imagine. As always, I’ve allowed time to rest and recharge, so we can enjoy our adventures at a comfortable pace.

What should i pack?

Come prepared for warm weather, with lightweight, breathable clothing to keep you comfortable throughout the day. Modesty is important in many parts of India, so I recommend clothing that is respectful of local customs.

For ladies, long skirts, loose trousers and longer shorts are ideal. Tops that cover the cleavage are best, I also recommend covering your shoulders, capped-sleeve tops are a great option.

For men, shorts and T-shirts are perfectly suitable. Comfortable walking shoes or sandals with secure straps are great for exploring forts, palaces and historic sites.

A hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and a light scarf are also useful for sunny days and visiting temples.

Don’t worry about getting everything organised just yet! I’ll provide a more detailed packing list closer to departure to help you prepare for our adventure.

What support do you provide?

I know that planning a trip to India can feel a little overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. That’s why I’ll be here to guide you with all the knowledge I have captured from over the years.

Once you’ve booked, I’d love to meet with you, either in person or over Zoom, to chat about the journey and answer any questions you may have. It’s a lovely opportunity to get to know one another and help you feel comfortable and confident about the adventure ahead.

I’ll guide you through all the practical details — flights, visas, travel insurance, packing, money, what to wear, power adaptors and all those little questions that inevitably pop up along the way. While you’ll be responsible for arranging your own travel documents and personal requirements, I’ll make sure you know what needs to be done and, importantly, when.

As we get closer to departure, I’ll send reminders to help keep everything on track, so you can focus on looking forward to the adventure rather than worrying about the details.

Before we leave, I’ll set up a private WhatsApp group so you can connect with your fellow travellers, get to know one another and share in the excitement as our journey approaches.

My aim is for you to feel prepared, supported and excited by the time departure day arrives — not overwhelmed by the logistics.

I’ll guide you through the planning. You just need to get yourself to India, and we’ll take it from there!

What happens if the itinerary changes?

India is an ever-changing country, and sometimes circumstances such as weather, transport disruptions or other unexpected events mean we need to adjust our plans.

If changes become necessary during the tour, I’ll keep you informed and make decisions in the best interests of the group, while working to preserve the spirit and quality of the experience.

One of the benefits of travelling with a small group and an experienced host is the flexibility to adapt when needed. If something doesn't go to plan, I'll do my best to find an alternative experience so we can continue enjoying our journey together.
