FAQs

7 Things to Know Before You Go:

Before embarking on your journey to Morocco, it's important to address some common questions to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.

1. Be aware that alcohol consumption in public is strictly prohibited, and even in private settings, it is often only tolerated at best. You'll find that most restaurants and cafes do not serve alcohol of any kind, so it's best to be prepared for this cultural difference when planning your trip. Additionally, it's crucial to note that drug use of any kind is strictly prohibited and can result in severe penalties. In contrast to the strict prohibition of drug use, tobacco products are available in Morocco, and smoking is permitted in designated areas where allowed.

2. Respecting the dress code is essential. When venturing into religious or conservative areas, dressing modestly is not only appreciated but is also a sign of respect for local customs and traditions. It's essential for women to cover their shoulders, knees, and chest when visiting mosques or other religious sites and to avoid wearing revealing or form-fitting clothing in public spaces. For a complete list of suggested and appropriate attire, feel free to contact me for further guidance tailored to our specific itinerary.

3. When capturing moments in Morocco, it's important to be mindful of cultural sensitivities, especially when photographing ordinary people in their daily lives. Taking photos of locals without their consent, particularly in intimate or private settings, can be considered intrusive and disrespectful. It's essential to always ask for permission before taking someone's photo and to respect their wishes if they decline. Additionally, remember to approach photography with sensitivity and empathy, considering the impact your actions may have on the subjects and their communities. By showing respect for the privacy and dignity of the people you encounter, you can ensure a positive and meaningful experience for everyone involved.

5. Animal Welfare. In Marrakech, it's all too common to see animals exploited for entertainment—from berery monkeys dressed in baby clothes and sedated snakes coaxed by snake charmers to horse-drawn carriages promising a romantic tour of the city. Unfortunately, these practices often mean that these creatures suffer in inhumane conditions for the sake of tourism. I encourage you to be mindful of their plight and support ethical alternatives that prioritize animal welfare. Your travel choices can make a real difference, ensuring that your Moroccan adventure is as compassionate as it is unforgettable. Thank you for your understanding and commitment to responsible travel.

7. Show respect for religious traditions by refraining from exaggerated public displays of affection and being silent during calls to prayer. This is extremely important.

Remember, we are guests in this land, and it is essential to honor their culture and traditions.

Keeping these considerations in mind will help you enjoy this journey through Morocco with ease and respect for its customs and traditions.

8. Physical Demands: Moderate

While the tour in general is not very strenuous, sure-footed mobility is required. You will encounter uneven surfaces, stairs (some flights will be quite steep), and the shifting sands of the Sahara Desert. Please note that the trip will also involve walking tours of up to 2 hours long and being outdoors in varying temperatures. Layers are advised.

Dietary Options

Morocco boasts a rich culinary heritage with a diverse array of traditional dishes, many of which are centered around animal-based proteins.

For vegetarians and vegans traveling to Morocco, dining options vary depending on the location. In tourist areas, restaurants tend to be accommodating to diverse dietary preferences, offering a range of vegan and vegetarian options on their menus. From flavorful tagines bursting with aromatic spices and hearty vegetable stews to vibrant salads and couscous dishes, Moroccan cuisine offers a wealth of plant-based delights.

However, in more remote or less visited areas, finding these alternatives may prove more challenging. To ensure you can maintain your plant-based diet throughout your journey, consider bringing along protein bars or other snacks to supplement your meals.

As a vegetarian myself, I've personally sought out eateries that cater to both omnivores and plant-based eaters, ensuring a satisfying dining experience for all of us.

Day 1 - Nov 6

Day 1 - Nov 6 image

مرحبا بكم في المغرب Marhaba!

Welcome to Marrakech, affectionately known as the Red City due to the warm, reddish hue of its ancient walls and buildings. In Arabic, Marhaba means welcome, a term that evokes the hospitality and conviviality so dear to Moroccan culture.

The walls of Marrakech's medina* hold hidden spaces. As you pass through its ancient ramparts and wander the sun-kissed streets, you are often unaware of the beauty concealed behind the doors. Your first experience as a visitor to one of the riads* illustrates this; as you step through the doors for the first time, the hidden splendor of Marrakech reveals itself.

Upon arrival, I’ll meet you at our riad, where you’ll have time to settle in, relax, and prepare your mind, body, and spirit for the adventures ahead. You'll meet your fellow adventurers over a warm cup of mint tea at this serene oasis amidst the bustling city.

In the evening, we’ll indulge in our first dinner together on one of Marrakech’s renowned rooftop terraces, offering a stunning view of the lively and exotic Jamma El Fna square.

____

*A medina is the old center of a city in Morocco, usually from the Middle Ages. It is surrounded by a wall, and you can only enter through the old city gates, called Bab. There are seldom proper roads; mostly narrow streets that you share with motorbikes, donkeys, juice sellers, and, of course, a lot of people.

*A riad is a traditional Moroccan and Andalusi architectural treasure—designed with an inner courtyard providing privacy and tranquility at its heart. Today, the term "riad" often refers to charming guesthouse-style accommodations featuring private rooms alongside welcoming shared spaces. I always choose riads when traveling in Morocco because of their authentic allure and intimate atmosphere, which gracefully captures the essence of Moroccan hospitality.

Culture Tip:

Marrakech provides a delightful assault on the senses, and many who have visited here will agree it is probably one of the most evocative places in the world. The hum of haggling voices, the calls to prayer, the explosions of color, and the wonderful (but not always) aromatic smells wafting from the numerous street stalls are quite simply intoxicating. Please gently release any expectations and perspectives that we tend to hold fast to in the West and embrace the chaos and marvel that is Marrakech.

A bit of history: The Amazigh people (pronounced Ah-ma-zeer), most often referred to as Berbers, are the oldest inhabitants of North Africa and the largest indigenous group in Morocco. With their own language and rich cultural traditions, the Amazigh have long strived to safeguard their identity and secure political and linguistic recognition. Their journey toward integration into modern Moroccan society has been a long and ongoing process.

Among the Amazigh, the Tuareg stand out for their traditionally nomadic, pastoral lifestyle. Proudly, they refer to themselves as “Amazigh”, meaning ‘free men’ or ‘noble people.’ Although the term “Berber” is commonly used in reference to this group, many prefer “Amazigh” as a more respectful and accurate representation of their identity and heritage.

In my travels throughout Morocco, I've found that the term berber is used primarily due to the familiarity of the term, and in this itinerary, I have also used the term on occasion as an adjective. However, by using the term “Amazigh,” we honor the diversity and complexity of this ancient people, celebrating their vibrant culture and enduring legacy—a testament to their resilience and profound contribution to Morocco’s rich tapestry of traditions.

Day 2 - Nov 7

Day 2 - Nov 7 image

Uncovering Treasures

Wake up refreshed and ready to seize the day.

We’ll start the day with a classic Moroccan breakfast, then dive into something delightfully different: a self-paced treasure hunt through Marrakech’s medina. Rather than a standard tour, this experience reveals the city’s hidden corners one clue at a time, leading you through winding souks and toward iconic spots at your own rhythm. There’s no rush, and if you don’t finish today, you can pick up tomorrow. Just don’t miss the final clue—it leads us straight to our lunch destination: a charming café rich in flavor, art, and local character.

After a scrumptious meal, ladies have the optional opportunity to adorn their hands or feet with all-natural, organic henna*—a tradition steeped in artistry and beauty. If you're interested in this experience, please let me know in advance so I can make arrangements.

Enjoy some free time after lunch, or continue your exploration at your own pace in the late afternoon.

Evening of Gnawa Spirit and Tea Ceremony
This evening, we gather for a special private event arranged exclusively for our group: an intimate Gnawa music experience paired with a traditional Moroccan tea ceremony and dinner.

Gnawa music, rooted in spiritual healing and ancestral memory, originated in West Africa and evolved in Morocco through centuries of cultural blending. While master musicians now perform across the country, our host remains faithful to the traditional form, offering a powerful, grounded presence rather than spectacle.

Though full Gnawa ceremonies, known as Lila, can last all night, we’ll experience a shortened version that honors the essence of this sacred art. As the hypnotic rhythms unfold, we’ll share mint tea and local pastries in a warm, reflective setting.

--------------------

*What's a souk? A souk is the local, weekly market. In some places, this is an outdoor space, whereas in Marrakech, the ancient souk is inside the medina. In the smaller towns and villages outside the city, the vendors come from near and far in their vans and lay out their wares on improvised tables. In the larger, touristy cities, the word is also used for the parts of the medina that these days are mostly used for souvenir shopping. In Marrakech, for example, there are different parts of the souks for different goods, for example, the carpet souk, spice souk, metal works souk, and leather souk.

*Henna grows as a small tree or shrub, between 2 to 8 meters in height. Dye made from henna leaves has been used for thousands of years as temporary skin art and to dye fabrics.

*Gnawa music traces its origins to the Gnawa people, an ethnic group brought to Morocco from sub-Saharan Africa around the 11th century. Descendants of those enslaved from regions like Mali, Senegal, Chad, and Nigeria have developed a rich spiritual musical tradition that continues to resonate today. This unique art form combines ritual poetry with traditional music and dance, placing the Gnawa master at the center of the performance as they skillfully play the ghembri—a guitar-like instrument that sets the soulful rhythm of the experience.

Day 3 - Nov 8

Day 3 - Nov 8 image

Bedazzled & Starstruck

Enjoy a free morning to either pick up where you left off with the treasure hunt or explore more bedazzling gems around the Red City. If you’ve already uncovered all the hunt’s secrets, come see me for a curated list of must-visit museums, monuments, landmarks, and experiences that will fill your mind with wonder and keep your adventure alive.

When it comes to lunch, feel free to treat yourself to one of the many gastronomic selections at local eateries in the medina or near the main square. As always, see me for a list of recommendations. Enjoy free time in the afternoon before we reconvene at nightfall.

For dinner, prepare to be starstruck as we journey into the Agafay Desert for an unforgettable night of gastronomy and astronomy* beneath the vast Moroccan sky. After a savory meal at a nomadic desert camp, our “Starry Tales” experience begins—a magical fusion of celestial observation and traditional Arabian folklore.

Through state-of-the-art telescopes, an expert astronomer reveals distant planets and shimmering constellations. As we gaze skyward, a master storyteller weaves ancient tales that echo the rhythms of the stars, enriching the cultural and historical layers of the evening. This extraordinary event offers far more than a typical stargazing night. It’s a profound encounter with the cosmos and a celebration of the desert’s natural beauty and timeless heritage.

We’ll have a heavenly sleep back at our Riad in Marrakech.

*Please note: This stargazing experience is subject to clear skies and favorable weather conditions. If visibility is poor, the evening will be thoughtfully adapted with an equally meaningful alternative. The storytelling component will still take place, just in a more comfortable indoor or sheltered setting to ensure an enjoyable and authentic experience.

Day 4 - Nov 9

Day 4 - Nov 9 image

Majestic Mountains & Verdant Valleys

After an early breakfast, we'll be picked up by our dedicated driver, leave behind the hurry-skurry of Marrakech, and set our sights towards the Sahara. Our journey takes us along the famous Tizi n'Tichka—ⵜⵉⵣⵉⴻⵏ ⵜⵉⵛⴾⴰ in the Amazigh language—a historic mountain pass constructed in 1936 by the French army during Morocco’s colonial era. Situated at an impressive 2,260 meters (7,400 feet), this is the highest mountain pass in North Africa and boasts over 800 turns, so if you're prone to motion sickness, be sure to prepare accordingly.

We’ll pause along the way to stretch our legs and enjoy a light meal before winding our way down into the lush Drâa Valley*, which extends for almost 200 km towards the south and irrigates a narrow oasis where dates and henna* grow.

By late afternoon, we’ll arrive at the ancient village of Tamnougalt—a place steeped in history, culture, and resilience. Here, my dear friend Hassan works passionately to preserve the rich culture of his family and extraordinary community. He is the seventh-generation guardian of Tamnougalt’s heritage.

Originally built at the beginning of the 1500s as the administrative and residential hub for the Mezguita tribe’s leaders, this kasbah has been painstakingly restored and boasts a unique fusion of Moorish, Roman, and Berber architectural influences, all painted with natural pigments. Its breathtaking rooftop terraces offer stunning views, while the homemade cuisine and impeccable hospitality promise to make your stay truly memorable and one of the highlights of this journey.

We will be hosted here for two nights.

____

*Over 4.5 million majestic date palms grace the Drâa Valley. Many varieties thrive in the valley’s unique microclimate, each bursting with distinct flavors and textures. These palms are the lifeblood of the region, providing sustenance and economic prosperity to the local communities.

Day 5 - Nov 10

Day 5 - Nov 10 image

History, Serenity & Party

Today is a celebration of all things vibrant! We begin with a delicious Berber breakfast, followed by a guided tour of the stunning 16th-century kasbah and its lush gardens, led by the ever-knowledgeable Hassan. Lunch will be a peaceful picnic amid this oasis paradise, where every moment refreshes your spirit.

After lunch, take some time to explore the tranquil village at your own pace or unwind with a peaceful nap on one of the kasbah's inviting rooftop terraces. After a well-deserved rest, get ready for an evening that pulses with rhythm.

Following a delicious homemade dinner, the Kasbah’s walls reverberate with the sounds of live Chaabi* music. Its driving beats blend Arab, African, and Western influences—melding traditional Berber tunes with improvised hints of pop, rock, and reggae. As the music flows spontaneously, this is no time to be a mere spectator. So, let go of your inhibitions, set your spirit free, and let it rock!

___

*Chaabi, Morocco’s popular music, is a vibrant and dynamic genre that defies a single definition. Chaabi varies widely from one setting to another. It originally emerged as street music in bustling squares and souks, and today, you can hear its lively rhythms in cafés, restaurants, and at joyous wedding celebrations.

Day 6 - Nov 11

Day 6 - Nov 11 image

Spellbound by the Sahara.

The desert is not told; it is lived!

Leaving the remarkable kasbah behind, we journey further south to the very end of Highway N9 and the arid desert town of M'Hamid El Ghizlane—our gateway to the timeless beauty of the Sahara. At about 500 meters above sea level and only 24 kilometers from the Algerian border, this often-overlooked gem boasts expansive palm oases that hint at settlements dating back to 3000 BC. Here, we’ll meet our experienced desert guides, board our 4x4s, and travel two hours even deeper into the sweeping dunes of Erg Chigaga* to reach our secluded desert camp.

After settling in, we’ll take a short camel ride across undulating dunes. Feel the serene energy and silence of the vast ocean of sand as we climb the tallest dune to absorb the peaceful ambiance of the desert at dusk. Back at camp, after a delicious dinner, gather around a cozy campfire under a glittering canopy of stars and planets. If you're up for an early start, witnessing the breathtaking sunrise over the dunes is an experience that will surely tick a spot off your bucket list

___

*Erg Chigaga is one of Morocco's several ergs—large seas of dunes formed by wind-blown sand. It is a breathtaking natural wonder located approximately 45 kilometers (28 miles) west of the quaint town of M’Hamid El Ghizlane. This expansive erg stretches about 35 kilometers by 15 kilometers, with some dunes soaring to over 50 meters (164 feet) in height. Though not as easily accessible as other destinations, Erg Chigaga rewards the adventurous with its unspoiled serenity, authentic nomad culture, and boundless opportunities for exploration.

Day 7 - Nov 12

Day 7 - Nov 12 image

The Journey Back Begins

Today, we bid the dunes farewell as our desert guides drive us back to M'hamid, where we rejoin our driver and head north to the historic city of Zagora—the renowned crossroads of trans-Saharan caravans. Still swept by wind and sand, Zagora once flourished in the 11th century, when the Almoravids* built an imposing fortress to protect it. At the city’s southern tip, you'll see the famous signpost pointing toward Timbuktu*, marking it as a 52-day camel caravan journey—a photo op that connects us with history. The original painting has been replaced by successive copies through the years, though the camels and nomads depicted today are historically accurate.

We will spend one night here in Zagora.

____

*Timbuktu—also known as Tombouctou or Timbuctu—is a historic Tuareg city nestled along the Niger River in Mali. Renowned for its pivotal role as a trading post on the trans-Saharan caravan route and as a flourishing center of Islamic culture between the 1400s and 1600s, this legendary city sits on the southern edge of the Sahara. Its storied past continues to inspire travelers with tales of ancient trade, scholarly achievement, and enduring cultural heritage.

Day 8 - Nov 13

Day 8 - Nov 13 image

"Are you not entertained?”

Today, as we continue our northbound journey back toward Marrakech, we have one more iconic destination to explore—the Ksar* of Aït-Ben-Haddou. You might recognize its dramatic silhouette from films like Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, and The Mummy Returns. This legendary ksar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, stands as a striking example of southern Morocco’s rich architectural heritage.

We’ll have plenty of time to wander through its ancient alleys and take in the captivating sights, scents, and sounds of this historic monument. Enjoy some leisurely shopping for local crafts* or a meal at one of the local eateries* for lunch. Guided tours are available if you wish to learn more about its storied past. Please let me know if you are interested so it can be arranged in advance. After this visit, we'll head to our riad. In the evening, we'll dine at the riad's restaurant, which serves a savory mix of French and Moroccan cuisine to delight your taste buds. I can tell you that this place has some of the best food I've ever eaten in Morocco!

We'll spend a night in this inspiring location before the final leg of our journey back to Marrakech the following morning.

____

*A Ksar is a type of fortified village in North Africa, usually found in the regions predominantly or traditionally inhabited by the Amazigh. These fortified villages were built originally as community fortresses for sedentary populations.

*My recomendatoins:

1. Getting lost in the maze of red clay buildings is the best way to discover this place. As you wander, be sure to keep an eye out for the "Berber Picasso." Step into a cozy workshop where he transforms a simple sheet of paper into a pastel tapestry of earthy saffron, deep browns, and delicate indigo washes. I first met this self-titled "Berber Picasso" on my second visit to Ait Ben Haddou back in 2019. I was completely captivated by his unexpected technique, as he appeared to be applying only water to the paper. There's nothing to be seen until... well, you'll have to discover it for yourself. His process, a mesmerizing blend of fire and water known as pyro aquarelles, defies description. Witnessing his artistry firsthand and his big smile as he witnessed our amazement was a heartfelt reminder of how purchasing original gifts from local artisans supports the preservation of their rich cultural heritage and their livelihood.

2. Lunch at the Tawesna Salon de Thé. In this Amazigh solidarity café, tradition and empowerment blend to create a unique culinary experience. Born from an all-women cooperative, Tawesna is dedicated to preserving the rich culinary heritage of the Ouarzazate region while celebrating the strength of local women. The open-air eatery sits at the entrance to the Ksar—at the end of a long bridge over the riverbed.

More than just a café, Tawesna serves as a meeting place where women from Ait Ben Haddou come together, forging a path toward financial independence in a region where opportunities beyond household duties are rare. Every dish reflects the authentic flavors of home and the enduring spirit of the community. I’ve enjoyed many memorable lunches here on my pat travels. Care to join me on this one?

Day 9 - Nov 14

Day 9 - Nov 14 image

Full Circle: Back To The Red City

Once again, the majestic Atlas Mountains await us as we leave the echoes of lush oases and the dream-like desert landscape behind. Upon reaching Marrakech in the afternoon, our wonderful driver will drop us off at our riad, giving you the remainder of the day to rest or explore at your leisure.

Perhaps you’ll opt for a relaxing visit to a traditional hammam*—a unique add-on experience available by prior arrangement. Just let me know if you're interested, and I'll take care of the details.

This evening, you’re free to choose your dining experience. For those who want to try a traditional Marrakech dish, their crowning glory is the lamb tagine. For the locals, this dish is the epitome of comfort food. Slow-cooked to perfection in earthenware pots, this tender lamb stew is, without a doubt, one of the most classic dishes you can have in Marrakech. If you lean towards vegetarian or vegan, like me, many eateries cater to our preferences and taste buds.

Either way, I'm happy to share a list of recommendations for all culinary choices.

Tonight, rest up, dear travelers, as tomorrow marks our final day together in this mesmerizing land.

____

*Step into the serene world of the Moroccan hammam—a sanctuary where centuries-old rituals blend seamlessly with modern luxury. Traditionally, when homes lacked public water, the hammam was a communal haven for cleansing and renewal. Today, you can choose from a variety of experiences—from authentic, three-room bathhouses to spa-style treatments—tailored to suit your personal taste. This time-honored ritual, as essential to Moroccan life as tagine and mint tea, cleanses, exfoliates, and nourishes your body in a warm steam chamber. A skilled Tellak, or hammam attendant, will guide you through this soothing process, ensuring an unforgettable and rejuvenating experience.

Day 10 - Nov 15

Day 10 - Nov 15 image

Last-Minute Marrakech

Today is your last full day to experience Marrakech at your own pace—perfect for those last-minute shopping sprees or revisiting your favorite spots. With no fixed itinerary, you have ample time to catch up on any sightseeing you may have missed during your earlier adventures.

Consider exploring the modern district of Guilize, where acclaimed restaurants and cozy cafes are just a short taxi ride from Jama el Fna Square. Alternatively, for a more tranquil escape, wander through one of Marrakech’s lush private gardens. You might choose the serene Secret Garden in the medina, the iconic Majorelle Gardens in the new town celebrated for their striking blue accents and botanical beauty, or the artistic ANIMA Garden just outside the city. Please note that these gardens charge a small entrance fee, which is not included in our itinerary, but I’d be delighted to help arrange your visit.

As the day winds down, we’ll regroup at our riad before heading to one of Marrakech's finest cultural cafes for a final dinner. Enjoy a memorable evening of Moroccan fusion cuisine and live music by Houariyat—a dynamic local band of five talented women from the Houara region whose traditional Berber rhythms and spirited performances will have you dancing along with the locals. After dinner, feel free to take one last leisurely stroll around Place Jama el Fna, soaking in the vibrant Saturday night ambiance.

If you need transportation to the airport tomorrow, arrangements must be made today.
