The 15th-century Portuguese Tangier Kasbah (fortified castle) is small and compact enough for a self-guided walk. Pass through Bab Haha (a historic gate with sea views) and enter Place du Mechouar. Or, join the locals for a paseo (stroll) along the palm-lined seafront promenade, Corniche de Tanger.
Just 20 minutes outside of the city and at the most northwestern point of mainland Africa, you'll find the 19th-century Cap Spartel and the mythical Cave of Hercules. Experts believe that the Phoenicians created the cave, and when seen against the Atlantic horizon, its outline resembles the shape of the African continent.
