About this trip

Mount Kailash, rising from the vast Tibetan plateau, is one of the most sacred mountains on Earth — revered by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of the ancient Bon tradition as the spiritual axis of the universe. Nearby, the pristine waters of Lake Manasarovar symbolize purification and renewal. For centuries, pilgrims have journeyed across the Himalayas to walk the sacred 53-kilometer circumambulation (Kora) around Kailash — a profound act of devotion and inner transformation.

Our Humla–Simikot route follows one of the oldest Himalayan pilgrimage corridors, beginning in remote northwest Nepal. Trekking through Nyinba villages, high mountain passes, and traditional trade paths before crossing into Tibet, this journey offers gradual acclimatization and deep cultural immersion. More than a trek, it is a passage through living Himalayan heritage — blending physical challenge, spiritual reflection, and breathtaking landscapes into one of the world’s most meaningful journeys.

At Treks With Purpose Nepal, we guide this journey with cultural depth, logistical precision, and deep respect for the spiritual traditions of the region.

Mount Kailash and the Karnali Corridor: Following the sacred geography

Mount Kailash and the Karnali Corridor: Following the sacred geography of Asia’s four major rivers.

This is not simply a trek. It is a sacred passage — walked for centuries by traders, monks, and pilgrims — connecting Humla to Mount Kailash. At Treks With Purpose Nepal, we guide this journey with cultural depth, logistical precision, and deep respect for the spiritual traditions of the region.

Detailed 19 - Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,350m)

Namaste and welcome. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel. The journey begins with an evening orientation briefing where we discuss the road ahead, followed by a traditional welcome dinner to meet your fellow travelers.

Day 2: Cultural Kathmandu & Spiritual Preparation

We explore the deep spiritual roots of the valley. We visit Pashupatinath, the holy Hindu shrine; Swoyambhu, an ancient site related to the very origin of human settlement in the valley; and the great Boudhanath Stupa, a vibrant "Little Tibet" where Himalayan people have made their home. If time allows, we will visit the old palace complex of Patan. This day serves as a spiritual orientation while we finalize the necessary permits and visas.

Day 3: To the Lowlands: Flight to Nepalgunj (150m)

A scenic afternoon flight takes us from the capital to the warm plains of the Terai. Nepalgunj serves as our staging point, marking the start of our journey toward the remote west.

Day 4: Gateway to the West: Simikot (2,950m)

We fly into the dramatic mountain airstrip of Simikot, the headquarters of Humla. We spend the day exploring the traditional village, observing local life, and beginning our vital acclimatization.

Day 5: Partly drive and then trek to Salli Khola (2,750m) – Mindful Descent and Community & Resilience

Our trek begins with a descent toward the Karnali River. We engage in a mindful walk through lush walnut and apricot groves, focusing on the rhythm of our breath and the shifting landscape. We drive partly with jeep and then trek to Sallikhola at the bank fo Karnali river corridor. Along the way, we stop to observe social and community works in Kermi. We learn how renewable energy (solar and micro-hydro) is transforming life in these off-grid canyons, providing light and power to isolated homes.

Day 6: Tumkot (3,150m) – Wisdom & Wellness

We ascend toward Tumkot to visit Namkha Khyungdzong and the cliffside Dhungkar Choezom Monastery, where we interact with the resident monks and lamas. Today, we also witness the tangible impact of community action by visiting a local health post and school to see how improved access to healthcare and education is strengthening these mountain communities.

Day 7: Thado Dunga (3,950m) – The High Approach

A steady climb takes us into high alpine territory. We observe the historical border between Nepal and Tibet, acclimatizing in the borderlands before entering the Tibetan Plateau the next day. For those who prefer, an optional Jeep ride is available to shorten the trek. We camp at Thado Dunga, our final night in Nepal.

Day 8: Into Tibet: Hilsa & Purang (3,800m)

We trek to Hilsa, observing the cross-border trade that sustains the local economy. Crossing the Friendship Bridge, we enter Tibet and drive to the ancient town of Purang.

Day 9: The Lake of the Mind: Lake Manasarovar (4,580m)

We drive across the vast Tibetan Plateau to the turquoise shores of Manasarovar. We can participate in traditional rituals of purification by the water, spending the afternoon in reflection at the world's highest body of fresh water.

Day 10: Base of the Sacred: Darchen (4,660m)

A short drive takes us to the foot of the mountain. We spend the day in Darchen, organizing gear and preparing mentally for the Kora, with the Barkha plains stretching out beneath us.

Day 11: The Saga Dawa Festival (Seasonal Departure)

On festival departures, we join thousands of pilgrims at Tarboche. We witness the raising of the great prayer pole—a vibrant display of faith and ancient tradition that resonates through the valley.

Day 12: The North Face: Trek to Dirapuk (4,800m)

The Kora begins. We walk through the Valley of the Gods, following the Lhachu River and passing through Yama Dwar. Every step is a mindful progression as we come face-to-face with the immense North Face of Kailash.

Day 13: The Transformation: Dolma La (5,630m) to Zuthulphuk (4,850m)

The most demanding day. We ascend to the Dolma La Pass, leaving offerings and engaging in silent ritual. We then descend past the emerald Gauri Kund to the Cave of Miracles at Zuthulphuk.

Day 14: Completion of the Kora & Drive to New Dongba

We finish the final leg of the sacred circumambulation. Reaching our vehicle, we begin the drive across the "Roof of the World," passing nomadic camps and high-altitude vistas.

Day 15: The Journey Home: Drive to Kyirong

We continue our scenic drive across the high plateaus, taking in final panoramic views of the Himalayan range from the north before descending toward the lush border town of Kyirong.

Day 16: Return to Kathmandu

Cross back into Nepal and leave the high plateau behind. We drive through the lush gorges of the Trishuli River valley, returning to the vibrant energy of Kathmandu.

Day 17: Kathmandu: Reflection & Celebration

A day for rest and personal reflection. In the evening, we gather for a celebratory farewell dinner to share the stories and the collective "purpose" experienced during our time in the mountains.

Day 18: Departure

Transfer to the airport for your onward journey, carrying the clarity and peace of the mountains back into the world.
