About this trip

Mount Rainier National Park is one of my favorite places on the planet, and I absolutely cannot wait to get to guide you around some of its most beautiful parts. We are going to spend 3 days and nights photographing its incredible views during sunrise, sunset, and nightfall. You should expect to walk away from this workshop with a strong understanding of how to capture the night sky and beautiful landscape images.

Getting to and Staying at the Park

Mount Rainier is about 2 hours from Seattle, Washington which is where I recommend you fly into. You will need to rent a vehicle (or have a really kind friend willing to drive you) for this workshop as well. Vehicle ground clearance shouldn't be an issue, so don't worry about getting a souped up rock-crawler.

We are going to be focusing on the southern and eastern parts of the park, so I would recommend finding lodging in or around the town of Packwood or inside the park itself (at the Paradise Inn). You could also find some lodging in the town of Ashford on the west side of the park, but keep in mind you will be doing some extra driving.

Photographic and Physical Requirements

This workshop is intended for any and all photographers. No matter your skill level, I would love to work with you to help you create the best images you possibly can. Regardless of whether you barely know what manual mode is or you're a seasoned veteran, you're welcome on this adventure.

With that being said, we will be doing some light to moderate hiking so make sure you know your own physical limits and feel able to do that. We will be at a higher elevation, so if you have heart or lung issues, please take necessary precautions. I am happy to work with you to try and find more easily accessible compositions if needed - the only thing I care about more than you getting amazing photos is you staying healthy.

What do we do if there is bad weather?

This is the Pacific Northwest - inclement weather is always a possibility. This time of year (in my experience) is usually pretty clear and dry and shouldn't present any issues but I cannot guarantee that. There is a chance that clouds or rain cover the mountain and other areas that we are planning on photographing.

If inclement weather forces us to cancel the majority of the workshop (2 or more days), a refund will NOT be issued, but a voucher for a future workshop will be.

Cancellation/Refund Policy

  • The deposit of $500 is non-refundable.

  • If you have to cancel more than 6 months before our start date, a refund of all funds besides the deposit will be issued.

  • If you have to cancel between 2-6 months before the start date, a refund of 50% of all funds besides the deposit will be issued.

  • If you would like to roll your refund into a voucher (of equivalent value) for a future workshop, we can absolutely do that.

  • If you have to cancel within 2 months, no refunds or vouchers will be issued.

I will do everything in my power to make this as seamless of an experience as I can for you. Whether that be rolling your funds into a future workshop, finding someone to take your spot in the workshop, etc. Please reach out if you have any questions!

Important Legal Info and Disclaimers

I, Dylan Perrow/PerrowPhoto (owner of McMains Media LLC), cannot be held responsible for any damage or loss to your person, gear, or other belongings. I also cannot be held liable for any financial burdens that may befall you due to not following the law or posted rules throughout the park. By registering for this workshop, you acknowledge the inherent risks of outdoor photography and assume full responsibility for your participation.

I want to make this workshop as enjoyable, informative, and safe as I possibly can. With that being said, we are all adults and you are responsible for the safety and well-being of yourself, your gear, and anything else you bring with you to this workshop. We are going to be walking through and around areas where weather, terrain, and wildlife can all pose a legitimate risk. Understand your own physical limits and comfort and do not put yourself in potentially dangerous situations.

You are also fully responsible for following any and all state and federal laws and rules of the areas we are shooting in. Should a police officer or park ranger approach you about your behavior, it is your sole responsibility to handle any repercussions, financial or otherwise.

I highly recommend purchasing travelers insurance for this trip - it is very affordable and can give you a big sigh of relief should anything go wrong.

In the event that I fall ill or am otherwise unable to lead this workshop, there are governmental disruptions or social unrest, natural disasters occur, or any other acts of god befall us, full refunds (besides the deposit) or vouchers for future workshops will be issued.

My workshops follow a very strict Don't Be A Dick policy. It is expected and required that on this workshop you treat your fellow students with kindness and respect - any discrimination, bigotry, or otherwise dickish behavior of any kind will not be tolerated whatsoever and you may be asked to leave the workshop early. This is an inclusive space where every single person is happily welcome regardless of their religion, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, physical ability, or any other personally identifying characteristic.

Additionally, it is expected and required that you treat the wildlife and nature we will be surrounding ourselves with with the utmost respect as well. This means adhering to Leave No Trace philosophies, not engaging with wildlife in a negative manner, and letting mother nature do its thing. It is a privilege that we get to enjoy these places and create art within them, let's make sure future people and generations can do the same.

One other note - please don't bring your pet(s). We are going to be hiking and standing in areas with many tripods and do not need dogs or their leashes to interfere with or potentially ruin our photographic experience. I am a dog dad and love animals more than anything, but this workshop is not the place for them.
