After breakfast, enjoy a boat ride across the Arabian Sea to Elephanta Island, where centuries-old cave temples carved between the 5th–7th centuries await. Marvel at the massive statue of Lord Shiva in his “Maheshmurti” form and the finely sculpted panels that narrate mythological stories. Return to the city and begin your guided tour with the Gateway of India, followed by a photo stop at the stunning Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, a Victorian Gothic masterpiece. Visit the Prince of Wales Museum (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya) to admire its art and history collections. Later, stop at Dhobi Ghat, the world’s largest open-air laundry, drive along Marine Drive, and pass through the Kala Ghoda Art Precinct, known for its heritage buildings and vibrant street life. After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Aurangabad. On arrival, check in to your hotel before setting out on an excursion to the remarkable Ellora Caves (closed on Tuesdays). Spread across a basalt cliff, this complex showcases Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain temples carved between the 6th–10th centuries, including the magnificent Kailasa Temple, the world’s largest monolithic rock-cut temple. Continue to the Grishneshwar Temple, one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, and conclude with a visit to the Daulatabad Fort, a hilltop citadel famous for its ingenious defense mechanisms. Return to Aurangabad for an overnight stay.
Today, embark on a full-day excursion to the Ajanta Caves (closed on Mondays). Dating back to the 2nd century BCE, these caves feature breathtaking murals, frescoes, and sculptures that illustrate the life of the Buddha and Jataka tales. After exploring this ancient monastic site, drive back to Aurangabad. In the evening, visit Bibi Ka Maqbara, often referred to as the “Mini Taj Mahal,” built by Aurangzeb’s son in memory of his mother. Continue to Panchakki, a fascinating 17th-century water mill that once powered a medieval kitchen, and, if time permits, visit the lesser-known Aurangabad Caves, rock-cut Buddhist shrines dating to the 6th century. Overnight in Aurangabad.
