1 DAY MUTAWINTJI NATIONAL PARK

Pick up from the Tourist Information Centre at 8am

One Day | Departing Broken Hill | Cultural Experience

Discover one of Australia’s most culturally significant Aboriginal landscapes on this highly sought-after one day tour to Mutawintji National Park. Led by Mutawintji Indigenous guides, this experience offers rare access to sacred rock engravings, hand stencil sites, and powerful Dreamtime stories in a restricted historic area.

About Mutawintji National Park

Mutawintji (pronounced moot-a-wint-ji) National Park lies at the sacred heart of the Byngnano Ranges and was once a major meeting place for Australia’s ancient Indigenous inhabitants. The park holds evidence of Aboriginal occupation dating back more than 8,000 years.

Dreamtime stories, cultural teachings, and historical records are preserved through rock engravings, hand stencils, and ceremonial sites hidden within gorges and caverns. Mutawintji means “place of green grass and water holes”, a reflection of its creeks, rock holes, and river red gums that sustain life in the outback.

Tour Highlights

  • Interpretive walks to Aboriginal rock engravings and hand stencil sites within Mutawintji’s restricted-access Historic Site

  • Audio-visual presentation sharing the Dreamtime and creation story of Mutawintji, prepared by the Indigenous custodians

  • Guided storytelling focused on cultural history, ceremony, and connection to Country

  • Spectacular outback landscapes across the Barrier Ranges

  • Opportunities to spot native Australian wildlife in its natural environment

Tour Experience

Your day begins with a morning pick-up from your Broken Hill accommodation. The 130 km journey to Mutawintji showcases ever-changing outback scenery, including:

  • The rugged Barrier Ranges

  • Vast saltbush and bluebush plains

  • Mulga woodlands and red sand country

Morning tea is enjoyed along the way, typically in the shade of a dry creek bed lined with majestic river red gums (locations may vary).

On arrival at Mutawintji National Park, the tour proceeds into the restricted Historic Site — an area traditionally used for ceremonies and initiations. Guests hear the Dreamtime story of Kullawarra, which explains the creation of Mutawintji, before embarking on guided interpretive bush walks to:

  • The Engravings Site

  • The Stencils Site

Along the way, remnants of fireplaces and stone tool-making sites provide insight into traditional Aboriginal life and land use.

The bush walks are graded easy to moderate and suitable for most fitness levels. Following the cultural walks, the group returns to Broken Hill in the afternoon.
