About this trip

Located in southwestern Africa, Namibia boasts a well-developed infrastructure, some of the best tourist facilities in Africa, and an impressive list of breathtaking natural wonders. Visitors can explore the capital of Windhoek and discover the lovely coastal town of Swakopmund boasting remnants of the country’s German influence, reflected in the architecture, culture, cuisine and the annual Oktoberfest celebrations. To properly appreciate this extraordinary country, you will have to venture out of the cities to explore the remarkable natural landscapes Namibia has to offer. These include: the impressive Fish River Canyon; the vast Etosha National Park teeming with abundant wildlife, such as lions, desert-adapted elephants and the Hartmann's Mountain Zebra; the hauntingly beautiful Kalahari Desert; and of course the Namib Desert stretching for over 2000 km along the magnificent Atlantic Coast. Namibia is an ideal destination for travelers seeking an unforgettable African experience in a uniquely beautiful untamed wilderness.

The ABA exists to build a better world by sharing the positive values and irresistible excitement of birding. We are a connector for all birders where they will feel part of a community, interact with fellow birders, and make fulfilling relationships with each other and nature. We provide resources to our members and the birding community at large on our website, through our print publications, our podcast, in-person events, festivals, and tours, partnerships, and ABA Community network. Wherever you find birders, you’ll find ABA.

I run out of superlatives when I try to share my experiences on this ABA trip to Panama. Every single day was filled with the sensory overload of new birds, new plants, new bugs, etc. I appreciated how each day was broken up into segments with some free time in between to rest or process photos or explore the property. I had never been on a trip of this type and had never been to a foreign country, so I was a bit nervous. I had wanted to go to Canopy Tower/Lodge for years as an introduction to tropical biology, so when I heard about the trip on the ABA podcasts, I decided it was time to have an adventure (and it truly was an adventure!) The itinerary was well thought out-we sampled many of the different habitats in the area, which exposed us to a maximum number of species-over 300!! Everything about the trip was wonderful-the other participants were great to spend time with (I really appreciated that they would call to me when they found interesting bugs). The Canopy Family staff were very friendly and they obviously know how to do eco-tourism right. The food was always delicious! Eating meals together as a group was an opportunity to connect and to reflect on the highlights of the day. One participant had to avoid gluten and it was handled very well at each meal-always an alternative available or something we could all eat. Our guides both had decades of experience and uncanny abilities to find the birds we were looking for, even in the thickest brush. They knew all the calls and could imitate them perfectly. They were able to get scopes on the birds quickly as well as directing us to where the birds were such that the entire group almost always got eyes on the bird-no small feat, especially in the rain forest. In summary, I feel like I can’t adequately describe just how amazing the trip was. I will remember it forever and can’t wait to try it again.

Birding with a group of ABA members in Panama was very enjoyable - most of us had never been there before. While most of us were strangers to each other at the start, our shared passion and the beautiful birds brought us together as friends. The Canopy Family is extremely well organized and accommodating, including excellent guides. There is room for improvement in communication between the ABA and folks signed up for the tour, some info wasn't received until the night before the trip, but I'm sure this will be addressed. I look forward to future ABA trips.

This was the best birding trip of my life! The Canopy Family and ABA took care of everything! Expert guide Carlos Bethancourt and ABA liaison Nate Swick were both incredible in their depth of bird behavior, habitat, and classification in Panama and beyond. Our group was small, cohesive, and full of passionate and interesting individuals who love birds and travel. Accommodations were perfect for this type of trip! Overall, worth every penny!

This was a great trip! We had so much fun and saw gorgeous birds. The weather was perfect in the mountains, the scenery was beautiful. Jake Thompson - our bird guide - was smart, knowledgeable, indefatigable in his search for birds. He has energy! Our organizer, Katinka, was great. Kind and smart and organized,. The artist - Christina Baal was excellent. She had ALL of us (skeptics that we were ) sitting and drawing Burrowing Owls and painting other birds. It was surprisingly fun. Very good at getting us all engaged. Five stars!
