Cruise the Netherlands with us!
We are chartering 2 50’ diesel powered canal boats to explore the Lakeland District of Holland. We depart from, and return to Hinterloopen and will explore towns and villages along the way. We typically make a few stops during the day to see the sights, or try a local delicacy, and of course, stop every night to explore a town. There is plenty of time to shop or visit churches and museum if you like, or sit in a bistro, or try some cheese or nap under a tree! It’s up to you.
Our boat sleeps a max of 10 people, with three heads and five cabins. One cabin is a double with a shared head, two have two bunk beds, two cabins have twin bunks that can slide together if needed to make a double bed. Those cabins have their own heads. If you want your own cabin as a single person, that’s possible too.
Our boat has a nice galley where breakfasts and lunches will be served onboard (unless we see somewhere we MUST eat ashore) and a few dinners will be onboard. Several nights will be meals ashore, because who wants to miss out on local fare? There is an outside seating area so we can enjoy the day and see the sights. In case of rainy weather, there is plenty of room inside and lots of big windows!
Here’s a suggested itinerary from the charter company, but I always find that it’s more fun to be flexible and stop wherever we see something interesting. We enjoyed every one of these stops on our previous visit here and this trip, we have our own local expert Nicky Arnoldus, my First Mate to show us around with some additional great stuff to see and do!
Woudsend is a charming city. Downtown, along the canal banks, you can stroll and admire the colorful houses or eat in one of the numerous restaurants. It's truly a beautiful place to stop and look around, especially with the sight of the huge mill on the other side of the canal.
Workum is a beautiful little seaside city with numerous mediaeval monuments like the Gertrudis church. You should also visit Werenfridus Church.
Makkum is a city full of history that reached its peak during the 17th century. It was a center of trade and industry, and today the locks are still merchants' houses... an interesting area to explore!
Bolsward
Typical of the area, the architecture in Bolsward is very interesting. The buildings' curves and details are a pleasure to see, especially on the City Hall. It is also a nice place to stop for lunch or to just take a break.
Sneek is a dynamic city in the area. It has interesting architecture, especially the great gate of the waterport and the city hall, which is built in a rococo style. Also, visit the Roman Catholic Church, which is a national monument.
Grouw is a pretty town. Quiet and peaceful, it's a terrific place to wander around and explore the area's typically Dutch houses.
Akkrum is a charming and welcoming city with good restaurants. You will discover the impressive and locally-famous hollow post windmill nearby.
Lemmer is a beautiful town, decorated by colorful houses along the canal banks. The city is well-known in Holland for its watersports.
