Your journey begins before dawn as we pick you up from your hotel in Huaraz around 2:00 a.m. and set off on a scenic drive through the heart of the Cordillera Blanca. After approximately 3 hours, we arrive at the Punta Olímpica Tunnel (4,730 m / 15,518 ft), where we’ll enjoy a light breakfast and prepare our mountaineering equipment.
From the trailhead, we begin our ascent across rocky moraine terrain toward the glacier. As daylight breaks, you’ll be surrounded by dramatic Andean peaks and sweeping alpine views. Upon reaching the glacier, your guide will assist with crampons, ice axe, and rope systems, and provide a brief refresher on glacier travel techniques.
The climb continues steadily up snow and ice to the summit of Nevado Mateo (5,150 m / 16,896 ft). From the top, take in breathtaking panoramic views of iconic peaks such as Huascarán, Chopicalqui, and Contrahierbas—a powerful and rewarding moment, especially as your first 5,000-meter summit.
After time on the summit for photos and rest, we carefully descend the same route, returning to the trailhead. We will then stop for a quick lunch on us. We’ll then drive back to Huaraz, arriving in the afternoon with memories of an unforgettable high-altitude adventure.
