About this trip

New Orleans is a Louisiana city on the Mississippi River, near the Gulf of Mexico. Nicknamed the "Big Easy," it's known for its round-the-clock nightlife, vibrant live-music scene and spicy, singular cuisine reflecting its history as a melting pot of French, African and American cultures. Embodying its festive spirit is Mardi Gras, the late-winter carnival famed for raucous costumed parades and street parties.

Learn about the different neighborhoods in NOLA.

FRENCH QUARTER

Bawdy, cultured, serene and brash – The Quarter is always two drinks in and a destination above anywhere else. Bite into it. Its sense of celebration and fun will sprinkle you like the powdered sugar from a plate of Café du Monde beignets. Don’t be quick to brush it off.

UPTOWNTHE GARDEN DISTRICT

From the Jazz Market to the Audubon Zoo, Uptown’s world is a New Orleans one where limestone mansions mix with modest homes on Mardi Gras parade routes. The fashion’s forward on Magazine Street but restaurants like Commander’s (locals drop the “Palace”) still celebrate classic Louisiana...

TREME

With a history as colorful and intertwined as trellised morning glories, the Treme stands strong as the oldest African-American neighborhood in the nation. Discover its museums, churches and centuries-old architecture -- all waiting just on the other side of Rampart Street.

ARTS/WAREHOUSEDISTRICT

The Warehouse Arts District embodies New Orleans now, a community celebrating and reimagining its culture. Residential lofts, museums, restaurants and art galleries find a perch in a neighborhood more brick than wood, more open than shut and where three centuries of commerce and...

MARIGNY/BYWATER

A bohemian spirit burbles in the Marigny and Bywater, located just down river from New Orleans’ historic center. Once working class neighborhoods, the cottages and bungalows of longshoremen and factory hands are now the studios and start-ups of 21 Century urban adventurers. Adjoining each.

DOWNTOWNCENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT

Downtown New Orleans and its Central Business District (CBD) has been reborn. Nightly now, the Mercedes Benz SuperDome dazzles in ever-changing hues while a construction surge confuses old-timers accustomed to parking lots where bistros and apartments now rise. New hotels open in old

MID-CITY

You want local flavor? New Orleans color? Hit Mid-City and join residents for a bar-stool beer and a friendly squabble over the Saints. Or order a bottle of Chablis and sit al fresco to watch the passing scene. Bike trails or streetcars get you there fast. Hurry, you won’t want to leave.

ALGIERS

Separate. Serene. Yet still New Orleans. Discover Algiers, a neighborhood just across the Mississippi filled with 100-year-old bungalows graced with charm and packed with history. A five-minute ferry ride from Canal Street, Algiers offers visitors a leisured pace, but one that keeps the...

ESPLANADE RIDGE

Notable, walkable, thoroughly enjoyable, Esplanade Ridge is a collection of high-ceilinged homes with rocking-chair-ready front porches, outdoor cafes, and a grand bike path parading from the Old US Mint to City Park. Pedal through history or just enjoy a relaxed afternoon in a close-knit.

LAKEVIEW

Resolute hearts build strong foundations. The motto, perhaps, for Lakeview, a neighborhood of family homes, shade trees and tenacity reborn after Katrina and better than ever. Walk Harrison Avenue, it’s busy, beating heart. Explore City Park, one of the nation’s great urban green spaces...

GENTILLYN.O. EAST & 9TH WARD

What’s the sound of New Orleans East? It’s brass band and bounce, a bull alligator’s roar, the cry of a Vietnamese market seller hawking her lemon grass or the whoop of a Mardi Gras Indian Big Chief leading his tribe. It’s a chorus singing of a varied and stirring community. Come hear it.

WESTBANKJEFFERSON PARISH

Why is it called Westbank when the area lies east of the main part of the city? That's because it actually resides on the western bank of the Mississippi River. The area is heavily residential but also includes the scenic Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, Barataria
