Tucked up in the northwest corner of Canada, the Yukon is a paddler’s paradise. Vast, pristine landscapes, unparalleled wildlife viewing, rich First Nations culture and fascinating colonial history make this area a “must do” trip for paddlers of any ability.
The Nisutlin River, located in the southwest corner of the Yukon, is the one of the only south flowing rivers in the Yukon and it meanders gently towards the Nisutlin River Delta National Wildlife Area, Yukon’s most significant staging area for migratory waterbirds every fall. This is your opportunity to explore and experience the land of the midnight sun. and to reconnect with the land and water. Join us this summer as you connect to land and water in one of the last true wild places.
This river expedition is the perfect option for someone’s first multi day river trip. if you have solid flatwater paddling experience you will not need any additional training (although specific river training would be really beneficial) for this river as it is a meandering class 1+ with a few areas where you will experience fun and bouncy wave trains. On this trip there is easy paddling, ample beach sites, bird and wildlife viewing opportunities, fishing and more await you on this paddling journey. You will be required to carry all of your own camping gear including tent and sleeping bag but the rest of the trip is fully catered and all equipment included. Tent and sleeping bag rentals are available in Whitehorse if you require. If you are still not sure if this trip is right for you, just give Norm a call.

You will make that you arrive in Whitehorse one day before our trip departs for the Nisutlin River. Our guide Kalin will be at the airport to pick you up and shuttle you to your hotel for your first nights stay. We will meet for a group dinner this evening to connect with all paddlers and to answer any outstanding questions. Arrive early if you can as there is so much to experience in the town of Whitehorse.
You will be up early in Whitehorse and Kalin and I will be ready to pick you up at your hotel. Make sure you grab breakfast and a coffee before we pick you up to load all of your gear into the van. It will be approximately a 4 hour trip to the Nisutlin RIver Recreation site. We will stop 1.5hrs in at Johnston's Crossing for a delicious cinnamon bun. We will have lunch at Nisutlin River Recreation while we pack up our boards. Our group will be on the water that afternoon with a 12km paddle to our first scenic campsite.
These days will be spent paddling and exploring the Nisutlin River while looking for wildlife. On past trips we have seen Moose, bears and wolves so we will need to be on the lookout. Day 3's paddle will be anywhere from 30-35km, day 4 our biggest at 42km, day 5 around 25km and day 6 at 21km to the Wolf River, our final campsite. The river pushes us an extra 4km per hour giving us a good boost for the first couple of days. These days will be filled with scenic views of the Pelly Mountains, sweet river side campsites, fresh water fishing and lots of great food.
This is our final day paddle and after a delicious breakfast along the spectacular Wolf River we paddle a fun and sporty section of the Nisutlin River before we get to the estuary and the Nisutlin River Delta National Wildlife Area. From here we hope to beat the winds and get across Teslin Lake, an 11km flatwater paddle to the town of Teslin. We will have lunch here while waiting for our shuttle to pick us up for our 2hr return trip back to Whitehorse. That evening we will have our wrap up dinner where we will share stories and laughter before our final night at the trip hotel.
This is your final day in Whitehorse. Kalin will be there to pick you up at your hotel for a shuttle back to the airport. We also recommend if you have time to stay a couple of extra days in the Whitehorse area. There are so many attractions and things to experience and enjoy here in the Yukon. Kalin is more than happy to help you with an itinerary to maximize your time.
