Birding and land iguanas’ journey
North Seymour is 1.9 sq. km (1.17 sq. mi) and it is one of the best sites for marine birds in the whole Archipelago. It is situated approximately 7 km (3.89 mi) north of Baltra Island. Cliffs only a few meters high (28 m, 92 ft.) form the shoreline, where frigate birds, blue footed boobies, herons, hawks, and swallow-tailed gulls sit among the ledges and rocks. A tiny forest of silver-grey Palo Santo trees stands just above the landing, usually without leaves, waiting for the rains to burst into bloom. The island is surrounded by lots of sharks such as the tiger shark, Galapagos shark, reef shark and other animals like sea lions, marine iguanas, snakes, rays.
Just off the east coast of Santa Cruz is located South and North Plaza Islands. North Plaza is visited only with scientific and conservation purposes. South Plaza is one of Galapagos´ most impressive ecosystems, it is just 0.13 sq. km (0.08 sq mi) and its higher point is 25 m (82 ft). Any excursionist will be amazed at the opuntia cacti forest and vegetation that changes colors according to the season. Sometimes it is difficult to walk due to the amount of land iguanas sprawled all over the ground. Rarely a hybrid of marine and land iguana can be found on the trials. Trails also take adventurers through sea lion colonies and along a cliff top walk where swallow-tailed gulls, Nazca and blue footed boobies, and red-billed tropicbirds nest.
Description:
The journey starts with a 40-minute bus ride from the hotel to the Itabaca Chanel. Then, a comfortable yacht is going to take you to the North Seymour Island, where the adventurers will be amazed at the unique flora and fauna in natural state. The tour consists of approximately two hours trail where guests can shoot wonderful pictures. One can observe the largest colony of magnificent frigate birds, swallow tailed gulls, blue-footed boobies, and land iguanas, as well as sea lions and marine iguanas along the coast. The trip allows to enjoy watching the pristine Mosquera. This small, flat, and sandy islet offers the adventurers the perfect sea lion behavior observation. It is also possible to observe lava gulls, coastal birds, and Sally light-footed crabs.
While enjoying the hot lunch in the cabins of the yacht, your trip takes to South Plaza island, which is authorized site, is home of colonies of land red and yellow iguanas and changing volcano landscape. On the northern part of the islet, excursionists begin the journey in fantastic cactus forest where sometimes trekking is difficult due to the amount of yellow and red land iguanas stretched along the rocky ground. During the dry season they survive on fruits and flowers of the opuntia cacti. Our guests will be amazed at the wild hybrid iguanas (mix between sea and land ones) and colony of sea lions while the trail forwards to a cliff top walk where swallow tailed gulls and tropicbirds nest. It is also a heaven for the red billed tropic birds, magnificent frigates, pelicans, and Audubon´s shearwaters. Incredible photography opportunities are given here. Punta Carrión near the Itabaca Channel or another site are so beautiful place to snorkel next to the sea lions and white tip reef sharks.
