Savor the off-season
Northern Lights
September 19-25th 2024
Just like late winter on the other side of the year, autumn in Rovaniemi is one of the best times to experience genuine Lapland. There’s no crush of Christmas visitors, and people–locals and visitors alike–let their hair down and just enjoy life. The trees along the rivers begin their colorful transition, the skies light up at night with auroras for the first time in months, and restaurants begins serving specialty dishes with ingredients freshly plucked from nearby marshes and forests.
Autumn is the best time for photographing the aurora borealis.
While most people believe that the northern lights shine the brightest when it’s dark and cold during winter, autumn is probably the best season to watch it dance above the sky. The planet’s orientation towards the sun maximizes the chances of solar flares interacting with the Earth’s magnetic field, therefore creating the most spectacular natural phenomenon.
Season of "ruska"
Autumn in Finland is all about the changing colours of nature, that we Finns call "ruska". The ruska season starts in northern Lapland in September, and flows down south painting all of Finland in earthy tones of red, orange, and yellow. September and October provide some of the best times of the year to go hiking and camping. Foraging is also a popular activity. Book a wilderness guide and they'll guide you to the world of exquisite wild food, like picking fresh berries and mushrooms straight from a forest.
The autumn months from September to early November offer earthy tastes and unforgettable sights from the first glimpses of northern lights to the colours of autumn foliage.
The northern lights season and golden autumn start in September, as days begin to get shorter.
By late August the sun is setting at around 8:30 pm and the short hours of darkness tell us that fall is coming. The darker period of the year is also a time to be happy as it heralds the return of the magical northern lights, the berries are starting to ripen on the forest floor and there is a great deal of color appearing all the way from the coast to the mountains of Swedish Lapland.
The long midsummer nights have made the natural bloom and the autumn time is now one to harvest and prepare for the winter. Berries and mushrooms and game from the forest are collected and make for some of our most famous culinary delights. The people of the region are also noticing a crispness to the air and it is time to gather wood and prepare an open fire and a sauna to warm us on the chilly evenings.
