About this trip

Step into the Arctic night, where the sky comes alive.

This carefully curated Northern Lights escape invites you to experience one of nature's most extraordinary phenomena from one of Iceland's most reliable and breathtaking viewing locations — Eyjafjörður in North Iceland.

Available from Gatwick and Manchester, this seamless 4-day / 3-night journey is designed for travelers who want more than just a glimpse of the aurora. It's about immersion — combining comfort, authentic experiences, and the raw beauty of the north.

Your base is a boutique hotel in the peaceful village of Hjalteyri, just outside Akureyri, perfectly positioned along the fjord. Far from city lights, this location offers exceptional conditions for Northern Lights viewing — often visible directly from the hotel.

Each day unfolds with carefully selected experiences that showcase the best of North Iceland:

  • Whale watching in the rich waters of Eyjafjörður

  • A five-course Icelandic tasting menu inside a greenhouse, with a local storyteller sharing tales of the north

  • Relaxation in geothermal bathing areas

  • Visits to dramatic waterfalls and coastal landscapes

  • A journey to the historic fishing town of Siglufjörður and its renowned Herring Museum

As night falls, the experience shifts. After dinner each evening, you head out in search of the aurora — guided by local expertise, chasing clear skies and the best possible viewing conditions.

With three nights of Northern Lights opportunities, comfortable accommodation at either Hotel Hjalteyri or Kaldi Hotel, and all meals, activities and guiding included, this is a seamless and deeply rewarding Arctic experience.

This is not just a trip to see the Northern Lights. It's a journey into the quiet magic of the Icelandic north — where nature, light, and stillness come together in unforgettable ways.

Arrival in Akureyri & Into the Fjord

Your guide meets you at Akureyri Airport and transfers you to your fjord-side hotel on Eyjafjörður — one of Iceland's longest and most dramatic fjords, stretching deep into the mountains of North Iceland. Time to settle in before a relaxed walking tour of Akureyri's compact and charming town centre. Browse local shops, take in the architecture, and get a feel for life in Iceland's northern capital.

The hotels — Hotel Hjalteyri in Hjalteyri and Kaldi Hotel in Árskógssandur — sit in quiet, picturesque fishing villages just 25 minutes from the city. Far from artificial light and right on the edge of the fjord, both offer exceptional conditions for Northern Lights viewing, with the sky visible directly from the grounds.

Dinner is served at a local restaurant, after which the evening opens up. Unwind in the seaside hot tubs and sauna set on the fjord's edge, and as darkness falls, keep your eyes on the sky — your first aurora viewing opportunity of the trip begins tonight.

Meals: Dinner included Overnight: Hotel Hjalteyri or Kaldi Hotel

Day 2

Day 2 image

Whales, Heritage, and Northern Lights Dining.

The day starts on the water. A two-hour whale watching excursion on a traditional wooden boat takes you out onto Eyjafjörður — one of Iceland's most productive areas for humpbacks and minkes — with the mountains of the peninsula rising on either side.

From the fjord, the road pushes north along the dramatic Tröllaskagi coastline to Siglufjörður, Iceland's northernmost town and the former heart of the country's herring industry. A visit to the world-famous Herring Era Museum brings that history to life in one of Iceland's most beautifully restored small towns.

The evening is the trip's most memorable. A five-course tasting menu crafted from local Icelandic ingredients, served inside a greenhouse, accompanied by a local storyteller sharing the myths, science and cultural significance of the aurora. Afterwards, step out into the Arctic night for a guided northern lights search around the nearby lake — open skies, no light pollution, perfect conditions.

Meals: Breakfast and dinner included Overnight: Hotel Hjalteyri or Kaldi Hotel

Day 3

Waterfalls, Geothermal Wonders and Arctic Night

Begin at Goðafoss — the Waterfall of the Gods — a sweeping horseshoe of glacial water that marked the moment Iceland converted to Christianity in the year 1000. From there, the road east takes you into the extraordinary Mývatn volcanic landscape: Dimmuborgir's otherworldly lava formations, the steaming craters of Krafla volcano, and the Hverir geothermal field where the ground hisses and bubbles underfoot.

In the afternoon, relax in the famous Mývatn Nature Baths — warm, mineral-rich geothermal waters set against some of Iceland's most dramatic scenery. Iceland's lesser-known but equally magical alternative to the Blue Lagoon.

Dinner is at the celebrated Vogafjós Farm Resort, known for its farm-to-table cooking using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. As night falls, head out on a guided northern lights hike with warm drinks and refreshments — an intimate way to experience the Arctic night.

For those wanting something truly unique, an optional night snorkelling experience is available — exploring the shoreline with underwater lights, with the possibility of the Northern Lights overhead (+£85).

Meals: Breakfast and dinner included Overnight: Hotel Hjalteyri or Kaldi Hotel
