Risks And Dangers To Consider

While we aim to maintain a tranquil and healthy environment for our students, there are various risks associated with travel and participation.  Risks can include, but are not limited to :

1.  Injury in participation - While we guide our students through safe techniques, it is not impossible to suffer an injury while participating in  this program.  We must insist that students maintain medical insurance adequate for travel and potential out of country medical care.

2.  Dehydration - The school will provide unlimited filtered drinking water, and tea.  It is important to listen to your body and keep your consumption of fluid up.  Students will find they need to drink substantially more water, and often add in electrolytes.

3.  Dangers off-site and in transit - Isla Mujeres is known throughout Mexico and the Caribbean as a safe and tranquil location to vacation and explore.  With that said, there are dangers in any community.  Kootenay Yoga School is not responsible for any accident on or off the school property.  We ask that students explore with caution, enjoy the island with a friend or two, and use careful judgement around off-site activities.

4.  Covid - Although the island has traditionally had very low cases of covid, there is still the risk of contracting this while in the program or in transit.  We insist that students notify us immediately if they have any symptoms of illness.  In the case that symptoms align with those of Covid 19, students will be required to take a test and isolate.  Kootenay Yoga School is not responsible for costs associated with this, but will assist students in completing the program or making up missed educational hours where possible.

5.  Mosquito illness - Isla Mujeres has had cases and seasons where various mosquito illnesses are present.  These illnesses can include Zika, Chikungunya, and most commonly Denque Fever.  While these illnesses are often not serious, in some cases they are.  We ask that students research the risks and speak with their trusted medical professional should they have questions specific to the risk associated with these illnesses.  Kootenay Yoga School will maintain a regular spray schedule at the school, and will provide supplementary mosquito repelling products - but in general students are responsible for supplying these things.  Kootenay Yoga School is not responsible for medical care ore expenses associated with a mosquito illness.  Here are a few excellent sites to learn more about theses risks:

In the heart of our journey, Kootenay Yoga School was created from a profound belief in holistic well-being. Recognizing the challenges of modern life, where daily routines can become repetitive cycles of wakefulness, nourishment, work, and rest, we felt the need for a sanctuary that transcends the ordinary. Our vision materialized as Kootenay Yoga School, an embodiment of holistic living.

The YTT200 at Kootenay Isla Mujeres was unforgettable. Everyone working at the school was kind helpful and made us feel so welcome. The food was so incredible, the facilities great and the island itself is so beautiful. Couldn’t be happier about choosing this school for my YTT200, would recommend to anyone. Thanks!

I had such an incredible experience during my YTT200 in Joshua Tree! From start to finish, this retreat exceeded all of my expectations. Stephania created a thoughtful and comprehensive curriculum that not only deepened my understanding of yoga but also left me with invaluable life lessons. Her teaching style is inspiring, supportive, and deeply knowledgeable, making every session both enriching and transformative. Despite the colder-than-expected weather, the setting itself was absolutely stunning - peaceful, serene, and the perfect space to fully immerse in practice and self-discovery. And the food was consistently nourishing, delicious, and made with so much love by Lisa and Brenda! Every meal felt like a true act of care, fueling both body and soul. I walk away from this experience not only with my yoga certificate but with a renewed sense of purpose, a deeper connection to myself, and an incredible community of fellow yogis. I would highly recommend this retreat to anyone looking to expand their yoga journey in a truly magical setting!

Sign up now. You will not regret it! Wonderful location, EJ was an amazing teacher + spirit, the entire time was well-organized and planned, and delivered an inspiring yoga + self discovery journey. It was so much more than I expected. I would highly recommend this to anyone. One block to the east for sunrises before classes start and stargazing at night and one block in the opposite direction to watch sunsets (with an optional swim in crystal clear water). In addition to the yoga training we experienced two different native Mayan rituals/performances that really made me appreciate where we were at and its history. I feel Kootenay undersells this training in its marketing. It was excellent in every aspect and an amazing value. Ages of attendees in our group were 18-64 and included people from around the World as well as different levels of yoga experience. . In addition to our teacher training certificate we built friendships that will last a lifetime! Kevin from Kootenay, who was on site the whole time, was an amazing coordinator. I want to do it again!

Hello Sally! Sorry that you had trouble with your return flight and travel documents....that really is stressful! And I am sorry you were faced with that! I have to remind you - we are simply the retreat hosts. We are responsible for ensuring the learning is inspired, the meals are fresh and delicious - and that our students have fun while with us learning! We do not coordinate flights or navigate necessary travel documents for our clients. Our purpose is sharing about yoga and our love for wellness! Sadly, we have nothing to do with your travels to and from us. This is mentioned in the terms and conditions to avoid any confusions. With students coming from all over the world, we simply could never be responsible for knowing the ins and outs of whom is from where and which documents would be needed. I am so sorry. It really is the responsibility of the traveler to know what travel documents are needed to enter into the country they are traveling through and too. I am surprised your travel agent didn't let you know this. I know generally the airline also sends an email of notification. :( When you booked your shuttle service home with us, you provided only this information "British Airways 1836 departure 13.10 Terminal 3" we would not have had any idea about which stopovers you were making - I am glad you made it safe and sound - and empathize for the surprise and the stress! We hope that once you were on the plane, you were able to rest and enjoy the flight and views!

This YTT on Isla Mejures, Island of Women was magical. It was a very well-run, immersive, intensive program, with a phenomenal instructor (Marcia). Kevin & Addy were both lovely and easy to connect with. My 200HR YTT was something I've contemplated completing over the past 5 years, and I put a lot of research into where/who I wanted to complete it with. Kootenay yoga school lived up to what i was looking for, it was awesome, and I'm grateful to have learned the essentials with them. This island holds such a special place in my heart now, and I'm grateful to have learned from Marcia, as she was so knowledgeable, warm and welcoming. The food was excellent, and I felt they did a great job with including culture from the Island & the Mayan peoples on top of our Yoga Teacher Training. If you are ready to take the leap, this is a great YTT program/company that I would recommend. :)

I had the best time here and felt so taken care of. Shout out to Marcia, Kevin, Addy, and the amazing crew. The food was so delicious. On hot days we had lessons in and around the pool to stay cool in the Mexican heat. The classes were very thorough and I feel confident in my ability to teach yoga now. THANK YOU & namaste! <3

I did my yoga teacher training on Isla through Kootenay in 2022 and it was an amazing experience. The location is beautiful and you do get some free time to explore the area. Michelle was an amazing instructor and I genuinely learned so much and was able to deepen my practice and build confidence creating flows and classes. They made most meals for us, which were delicious and healthy. They also even had entertainment some nights like a live band and fire dancers. I still talk to the other students that I did the program with sometimes and met up with one girl when I was in her town a year later! Overall a transformative experience where I made memories, learned new things and met really cool people.
