About this trip

The primary focus of the trip will be volunteering in the indigenous village of San Isidro Naranjal in the Oaxaca state of Mexico**, constructing fuel-efficient cookstoves and composting latrines. Volunteers will spend 5 days and 5 nights in the village in service of this goal. Travelers will also have an opportunity to explore the historical, cultural and gastronomic delights of Oaxaca City and the surrounding region; travelers will also pursue an eco-tourism adventure encountering waterfalls and other natural wonders near the village.

As this is a volunteer trip students are expected to raise a minimum of $1200 to help fund the charitable work. Students can pay this entire $1200 on their own or, as most past volunteers have done, can raise funds from friends, family and co-workers. MAP and Building Bridges Worldwide will help students in pursuit of funds.

San Isidro Naranjal and the surrounding region is NOT an area highlighted in the U.S. State Department travel warning to Mexico. More info here:

Itinerary

Arrive in Oaxaca, Group Dinner
Wednesday July 19
Students will travel from U.S and experience landing in Oaxaca and their first glimpses of Mexico. The volunteers will travel to the city center and get settled in their hotel rooms. While we encourage students to travel together and arrive at same time this is not required. After an in-country briefing among all students and group leaders, we will meet up with staff from local partner EcoLogic for dinner at a representative restaurant. Each night the students will be briefed on the following days schedule and itinerary.

Amazing trip! The quality and planning of work we were able to contribute to at the school were far beyond what I ever expected. The community of Santa Palencia was so welcoming and I was truly surprised to have the best cornbread I've ever eaten there. I can't wait to see the McCombs MBAs do more great work there and hope to return to Santa Palencia myself in the near future.
