Otavalo Indigenous Marke
Otavalo Culture, nature, lagoons

We start our tour tasting tropical fruits in Guayllabamba town. We will do a stop-over in Cayambe, where we will visit Proyecto Quitsato. Accompanied by a specialized guide, we will learn about the solar sun, the astronomy of the ancestors and The Incas. We will visit the Fábrica de Bizcochos (Local Bread Factory) where we will learn how to prepare it and will taste this typical bread of the province.

Later on the route, we will stop at Lake San Pablo panoramic viewing point, where we will be able to take some pictures. After arriving to Otavalo, we will do some shopping in Plaza de los Ponchos (Poncho’s Square) where we will find various handcrafts and typical fabrics hand-made by the indigenous people.

We will have lunch in any of the typical restaurants recommended by our guide. Then we can choose to visit one of these 3 places: La Casa de los Instrumentos (The House of the Instruments) or the Indigenous Fabrics Gallery where we will learn about the hand-made fabric techniques and how to produce natural colors or, if you are a quality leather-lover, we can visit Cotacachi – The city of Leather.

We had a great day with Kathy Rea horseback riding and hiking! The horse we rode were very well cared for and very domesticated. I can be a little skittish of horses but I never once felt like I was not in control. We saw wild horses, Andean fox, condors and many other beautiful birds. The horse back ride was a relaxing 1 hour and it was slow enough to really take in the beautiful Andean landscape. Then came the hike. We took the “hard” way up. It’s not an overly long hike but it’s a a pretty steep incline and the terrain is mostly gravel. Being “flat landers” the altitude was the hardest part. Kathy was very patient with us. We then had a lovely meal to finish the day!

From messaging about different options to booking through to a pululahua crater hike and then equator line museum it was great experience. A fabulous walk down into the crater (1 mile down) then two hilly hikes and back up to the rim. So glad we had messaged with Patricio before booking as he suggested the perfect trip for us. Lovely lunch provided. Marcial was a great guide plus a sweet dog we named Bobi who walked the whole day with us. Then we went to the equator line museum which was informative and fun. Would totally recommend
