About this trip

This is the most important indigenous market in Ecuador and it has a centennial history of fair trade, community sense and pride.

The natural and biological richness of the city of Otavalo and its surroundings has made it possible for the establishment of one of the most important cultures of Ecuador and Latin America. The Otavalos, or Otavaleños, have lived for centuries close to the San Pablo Lake, where they have developed their artistic skills using the resources of their environment, learning the art of making handicrafts. The ‘Plaza de Ponchos’, the central square, is a meeting place of cultures, where handicrafts and products from different regions of the country are offered and which, for centuries, has been used for this purpose.

A tour for shopping lovers! We will have the chance to merge with the people and their culture by visiting the fruits and vegetable market to know the richness of products of this part of the world and, then, visit the handicrafts market where you can go crazy and shop till you drop!

On the way, we will visit the Quitsato Museum, an interesting site showing how an Ecuadorian scientist has developed a very easy and graphic explanation about the observations of our ancestors to find the exact middle of the world and how it was and still is related to the local culture and beliefs.

This was amazing and the organisation by Catalina was fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble . Our guides Pepe and Victor had amazing knowledge and you felt safe at all points . There are plenty of cycle lanes as well . It was great to see a bit more of Quito and learn about some of the murals . The market was fab trying various fruits . Victor then took us through some chocolate tasting and what he does not know about chocolate is not worth knowing. It was an incredible afternoon and would thoroughly recommend .

This was a great introduction to Ecuador. Our guide Pepe was very knowledgeable and we learnt a lot in a short space of time . The middle of the world experience was also fun with the experiments at the equator as well as seeing some traditional huts and dress . Would recommend

Our guides were fantastic from beginning to end. “Viva Quito” !!!! Equipment/Mountain Bikes, helmets were also very good. (suggest bells for urban riding and equip with lights for evening rides). Terrain has hills and at 9400’ altitude. We learned a lot of the history and various neighborhoods of Quito. Stay alert for some rather serious pot holes and have fun The tour concluded with a very informative and delicious chocolate tasting class. 👍😊

We had the most wonderful time in Mindo with Pepe and Alvarito. They were the kindest people and gave us the most special experience. We got to see the hummingbird garden, Mindo forest and waterfalls, rode the cable car across the forest, butterfly garden, and chocolate tasting tour. It was such an incredible day, and so so worth the time and money. Pepe and Alvarito 100% made this day and we would definitely do it again! Thank you!!
