Overnight in Edinburgh
Your first visit today will be the Palace of Holyroodhouse, associated with Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite story.
Next, you will enjoy a walking tour of the Old Town of Edinburgh, where the narrow closes and historic atmosphere feel straight out of Outlander. Visit Bakehouse Close, used as Jamie Fraser’s print shop—one of the most memorable reunion scenes in the series.
Next, visit the iconic Edinburgh Castle, perched atop an ancient volcanic rock.
Overnight in Edinburgh
This morning, your Highland guide will pick you up.
Depart Edinburgh and visit Culross, a beautifully preserved 17th-century village used as Cranesmuir, home to Geillis Duncan. Continue to Blackness Castle, which appears as Fort William—the setting for some of the series’ most intense scenes.
We will then travel to Falkland, which doubles as a 1940s Inverness, where Claire first spots Jamie’s ghost.
Your next stop will be Stirling Castle. This imposing castle was home to the Stuart royals for centuries.
Overnight in Stirling
Your first stop this morning will be Doune Castle, featured as Castle Leoch, the seat of Clan MacKenzie. Continue to Drummond Castle Gardens, used as the formal gardens of Versailles during Claire and Jamie’s time in France.
Next, we travel into Glen Lyon, one of Scotland’s most beautiful hidden glens, used in recent Outlander filming, including scenes from the prequel Blood of My Blood.
Enjoy a scenic drive and stop at one of the stone bridges set along the river.
Overnight in Pitlochry
Today we begin our journey north to the Highlands, enjoying a stunning drive through Cairngorms National Park to Culloden Battlefield, where the Jacobite Rising came to its final, tragic end and where Jamie and Claire’s story reaches a turning point.
You will then visit Clava Cairns, the ancient standing stones that inspired Craigh na Dun, where Claire first travels through time.
Next, we visit the Wardlaw Mausoleum, built by Simon “The Old Fox” Fraser. This is the burial place of the Fraser clan chiefs.
We will then finish the day with a wee dram at a local Highland Distillery.
Overnight in Inverness
Explore Loch Ness, one of Scotland’s most famous landscapes, and visit Urquhart Castle. While not a filming location, this area captures the wild Highland spirit that defines much of Outlander.
You will then visit Beauly Priory, which was also not used as a filming location, however it has a strong connection to the story behind Outlander, as Diana Gabaldon drew heavily on real Highland history and clans, including the Frasers of Lovat.
Next stop is Castle Leod, the historic clan seat of the Mackenzies, which also has a tree planted by Diana Gabaldon in its grounds.
You will then return to Inverness to explore this lovely city and the River Ness.
Overnight in Inverness
Leaving Inverness, your first stop is Fort Augustus at the southern end of Loch Ness, where you can see the impressive canal locks in action and take a short walk along the water.
Next, we travel through the Great Glen, following a natural route through the Highlands used for centuries. Pass Loch Lochy and take in the dramatic scenery that mirrors the landscapes seen throughout Outlander.
Arrive in Fort William and visit Glen Nevis at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK.
You can then explore Fort William and learn about the original fort, built after the Jacobite Rising of 1689. The government needed a way to control the Highlands and suppress further rebellion, so a fort was established here in the 1690s, originally called Fort Kilmallie, before being renamed Fort William in honor of William III.
Overnight in Fort William
Travel south through Glencoe, one of Scotland’s most iconic landscapes, where you will learn about the tragic Glencoe Massacre. This dramatic and beautiful area was featured in the opening credits of Outlander, and you will recognize a number of the series’ most stunning scenes here.
We then continue across Rannoch Moor, a vast and atmospheric wilderness that perfectly captures the rugged beauty of the Highlands.
Next, you will visit the largest loch in Scotland, the famous Loch Lomond, before taking the scenic drive back to Edinburgh.
