Our Pacaya Volcano Hike is an unforgettable adventure: active, easy and fun for the whole family or a group of friends. We’ll pick you up at your hotel/lodging entrance in a private shuttle or SUV, depending on the size of the group, and start the approx 90-minute journey to the famed Pacaya Volcano situated southeast of La Antigua. Once we’ve arrived it’s roughly a 1.5-hour hike up this active “complex” volcano. While on our hike we will appreciate expansive views of La Antigua and Guatemala City and on a clear day, we may even see the Pacific Coast in the distance. Our local guide will stop at various places to share interesting facts about the flora and fauna, as well as the neighboring towns. Upon arriving at the summit, we’ll visit a small jewelry stand that sells beautiful items made by local artisans utilizing volcanic rock and ash from previous eruptions in 2010 and 2014. Here we will roast marshmallows over lava rock and enjoy a picnic lunch before beginning our descent.
For those not up for the hike, horses can be rented at the base of the volcano for approximately $15 USD. However, please keep in mind that they don’t go on the lava fields so you there is still a small portion you’ll need to walk.

We recommend wearing comfortable and breathable clothing and a pair of trainers, hiking boots or shoes with a supportive sole. The sun can be quite strong as well so sunscreen and/or a hat are also encouraged as is a light jacket as it can get windy. Other useful items are an eco-friendly water bottle, sunglasses, binoculars, and a camera! If you opt to do the afternoon hike a flashlight or a headlamp is also recommended for descent after sunset.
