PADI Advanced Open Water Course

The Advanced Open Water Diver course helps build confidence and expand your scuba skills through different Adventure Dives, such as underwater navigation, peak performance buoyancy and deep diving amongst others. Try out 5 different specialties while gaining experience under the supervision of your instructor.

This PADI certification is globally recognized. It allows you to dive worldwide and access sites as deep as 30 meters (100 feet) without supervision of an instructor – or 21 meters (70 feet) for 12 to 14 years olds.

Course Curriculum

Upon booking you will have access to your e-learning where you can find the diving theory. Underwater navigation and deep diving are required by PADI, and you can choose the remaining 3 adventure dives amongst the ones that interest you. The theory takes about 2 days to go through and has to be completed before your start date.

The course itself spans 2 to 3 days, with 5 open ocean dives. Throughout the program, you will improve your skills, discover different types of diving and gain experience, diving up to 30 meters (100 feet).

When trying to decide which Adventure dives to choose, think of these few considerations:

  1. What am I interested in learning more about?

  2. What will help me improve my dive skills?

  3. Are there any specialties I want to pursue after my Advanced Open Water course?

  4. What will I have the most fun doing?

  5. What is offered where I am diving?

For the eLearning, you will have access to the full list of adventure dives, you are only required to complete the sections related to the electives you choose. Nitrox is the exception, as it is not included in the Advanced Open Water eLearning. Your instructor will give you a briefing for the Nitrox dive instead.

The Adventure Dives

Mandatory:

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course features two mandatory dives:

  • The Deep Dive takes you beyond the 18-meter (60-foot) depth limit of the Open Water certification, allowing you to reach depths of up to 30 meters (100 feet). This dive helps you understand the effects of increased pressure on your body and equipment, while improving your buoyancy control and air management at depth.

  • The Underwater Navigation Dive focuses on developing your ability to navigate using a compass and natural cues, enhancing your confidence in planning and following a dive route underwater.

Elective: (choose 3 or 4)

In addition to these core dives, the course includes three elective dives that you can choose based on your interests from a variety of specialty options:

  • PPB - Nearly all instructors will most highly recommend taking the Peak Performance Buoyancy dive for at least one of the three elective dives. For the entirety of this dive, you are focused on breathing, buoyancy, positioning, and finning techniques. This dive will help you move around with more ease under the water. It will help your buoyancy and in turn help your air consumption which will allow you to dive longer.

  • Night – Night diving works just the same as a day dive, but you only have a torch guiding your way! It is an exciting new experience. You can see a lot of different animals out and about compared to what you would see in the day.

  • Wreck – Underwater wrecks are incredibly thrilling and exciting to explore. Your imagination can run wild while swimming around an old ship, plane, tank, pier, or vehicle that has sunk beneath the Ocean’s surface. How did they get here? Why did they sink?

  • Drift - In this dive, you will begin to identify which direction a current is moving, how to best position yourself, and how to plan your dive based on that current. This dive should make you feel more confident when diving in currents as you will better understand what is going on around you.  *Please kindly note that we don't often experience strong currents in Cabo San Lucas but we can still simulate this underwater

  • Nitrox - This dive will expand your knowledge of the basic physics and physiology of diving. You will learn how to analyze a Nitrox tank, set your computer, and dive on enriched air, please see our Nitrox specialty add on for more details on how to get fully Nitrox certified.

  • Underwater Photography – The underwater photo adventure dive teaches you the basics to start taking your own amazing underwater images.

  • Fish Identification – Fish ID is a great introduction to understanding the life you are seeing under the water. You begin learning the different fish families and how to tell them apart. You can also start to learn some of the really interesting symbiotic relationships found under the water. Fish ID can also help to understand the best places to search for different kinds of animals as that can sometimes be the best way to find them.

  • Rescue - Introduces core safety and rescue concepts and acts as a preview credit to the Full Rescue Diver certification

  • Surface Marker Buoy (SMB) - how to properly pack, unroll and launch the buoy from underwater - alerting the captain to your exact position when surfacing

  • Search & Recovery - how to locate lost objects underwater using specific search patterns and safely bring them to the surface.

  • Underwater Naturalist - Teaches you how to observe marine life, understand aquatic ecosystems and spot animal behaviors that you might otherwise miss.

Please ask us for any recommendations on which adventure dives to select 😀

Each specialty dive you complete can also earn credit toward PADI specialty certifications.
