      About this trip

A moderate birding hike around the Pink Beds Loop, approximately 3-4 miles.  Weather at the higher elevations can be unpredictable – rain gear and a light jacket are recommended.

In the shadow of the Blue Ridge Parkway, high in the Pisgah National Forest of Transylvania County, NC, lies a scenic enclave known as the “Pink Beds”. Exactly what the name signifies is not clear, but probably refers to the color of blooming flowers, laurel and rhododendron, in the spring.

There are trails, a creek, picnic area and an abundance of birds and wildflowers. After birding around the Picnic Area we’ll hike the short loop (approximately 3.5 miles) which includes a boardwalk through a unique wetland. Breeding warblers are a strong drawer for birdwatchers in this area, and we hope to see Blackburnian, Northern Parula, Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green, Ovenbird, and Louisiana Waterthrush.

Awesome adventures in Trinidad!! In addition to amazing birding the Local guides provided a deep dive into the culture with visits to several homes of friends, favorite restaurants and wonderful lodges. We saw over 200 species of birds which allowed me to add over 100 to my life list.

The evening dinners on the porch overlooking Port of Spain were lovely and romantic. Dining on a boat watching the scarlet ibis drift in, while we also saw flamingoes, was one of the most memorable moments of the whole trip. Food was good, oilbird hike amazing. The lodge in Tobago, with palm tanagers flying through the kitchen, was a lovely quiet place to bird.
