About this trip

8 Day Plein Air Etching: Sgraffito and Drypoint Intaglio Workshop

The location for this amazing workshop will be one of two beautiful Sicilian Villas located in the Sicilian countryside yet 30 minutes from the historic center of vibrant Palermo.

Sgraffito on Porcelain: durable after being fragile, immediate, versatile, singular

Drypoint on Polyester Resin: portable, tough, inexpensive, reproducible

In this exciting and multifaceted class, participants will learn two different, though related, media and techniques: Black and white sgraffito on porcelain, and dry point etching on PET resin. We will focus on the skies and sea of Sicily, working outside as much as possible to capture the light drenched and ever-shifting natural beauty of this enchanted place. Artists will leave with bisque-fired porcelain pieces suitable for display or further firing, and stabilized for travel, as well as a number of plates for printing. If time allows, artists will learn to wipe and pull prints from their plates. Artists should expect to be able to make one completed sgraffito piece or etched plate per day of class. All tools and materials will be provided, and of course bring your own tools if you have favorites! This will be a fun exploration of technique, with a special focus on strengthening visual memory skills.

Tim Christensen travels the world etching on PET resin and porcelain his observations of the skies and seas, and the creatures and systems living in them. He teaches extensively in The US and Australia, as well as operating a clay studio in his off-grid home nestled in the woods, on the coast of Eastern Maine.

Paul and David have both come from artistic backgrounds, Paul was a potter and David a decorative painter living in Mid-Coast Maine. They purchased Casa Pergola in 2007 and have spent the past 11 years renovating the once olive mill. Today Casa Pergola is a destination for travelers who are searching for someplace to stay in Sicily that is beautiful and more importantly a place that has soul.

Reviews

Casa Pergola is like Shangri-La. Breath taking vistas, luxurious accomodations, brilliant meals served outdoors under the magic of a Sicilian sky. All of this is only surpassed by the giftedness of the hosts, David and Paul, who are gems of generosity and kindness. With a scene so impeccably set, creativity flourishes. Ron is a master, not only at painting, but at teaching, at knowing when intuitively to step in and when to hang back. His support is genuine and gentle and never condescending. Consider yourself lucky to study with such an artist. This is an unbeatable combination of luxury and study. I keep thanking my lucky stars!
Amazing! The beauty of this hilly countryside is unsurpassed, the views, endless. The villa is comfortable with all the amenities, the patios fantastic. The hospitality of our hosts ,Paul and David, exceeded all expectations. I felt pampered and completely content. The opportunity to paint with the guidance of Ron Frontin, a master painter, is a unique opportunity, one not to be forgotten. Thank you all!
