People and history

The Magar, one of the ethno linguistic groups of Nepal representing 10.0% of Nepal’s total population are resident of the Annapurna Region. The Magars ruled most of the Annapurna area while establishing their own kingdoms in ancient history of Nepal. In the same time when the Khas kingdom called as “baise” or 22 states and  “chaubise” 24 states existed, there was “Bara Magaranth” (12 Magar Kingdoms) located to the east of the Gandaki River meanwhile the “Athara Magaranth” (18 Magar Kingdoms) were located west of the Gandaki River inhabited by the Kham Magars. These people now in the Annapurna region were living here before the existence of Nepal of today’s size.

Some of the kingdom of Magar people were believed to be in Palpa, in the history of Nepal. They are also believed to be the earliest settlers from the north of Nepal. Later in modern age, they mostly served as British or Indian army and few for Nepalese army. People of this region are famous as Gurkas by then.

Also they are well known for their hospitality and cuisines. Their settlement was mainly on the side of salt trading route of Nepal and Tibet by then. For evidence, if you sign up for poon hill trekking tour during October (Nepal observes a big festival of Hindu “DASHAIN”) you will very long herd of goats and sheep being transported to Kathmandu via Tibet. Korolla boarder to China connects this Poonhill trekking trail as a short passage to Kathmandu valley or Pokhara.

People in this region used to depend on animal husbandry and farming before tourism flourished to replace their income source. Now most of the local in Poonhill trekking region are involved as tourism entrepreneurs.

Best Time for Poon hill

The Poon Hill trek is open to trekkers all year round. It is just the question of getting there during the best seasons in the perfect weather for the excellent views. But to get the best of this trek, you should choose to trek during the peak seasons. The peak season is   Spring and Autumn . The best months you can trek are from March to May and from September to November. You, however, should pre-book your rooms on all of the night stops. The trails and tea houses will be busy with activity as it is the most preferred season.

If you are a person who wants to walk on a quiet trail on your own pace, you can choose the off season – winter or Monsoon. Winter in Nepal is cold and monsoon is rainy. Poon hill trail will be much emptier and so will the tea houses. You can choose among the tea houses you like after you get to the destinations, till the year 2017 AD. You will have to carry a raincoat and a little extra clothing for these seasons because of the dramatic mountain weather. Also these seasons are for those who love flowers and bird watching and taking photographs of butterflies.
