This trip, tailored to clients of Jim Nicholson/ JN Wines but open to all, offers a wonderful overview of the best of northern Portugal, including the Vinho Verde region on the way to the wonderful Douro, finishing in the vibrant city of Porto. Magnificent scenery and great contrasts between wine styles makes this one of our favourite trips.
Payments Policy
Each tour has a deposit of $750 per person which is payable at booking. The balance of payment is due 90 days prior to the start of the tour.
Cancellation Policy
If you wish to cancel your booking, you need to confirm the cancellation in writing by email or letter. If you contact Iberian Wine Tours prior to confirming your cancellation we can advise you of the cancellation charges applicable to your situation. The cancellation charge is based on the number of days prior to the starting day of the trip booked. The charges are per person cancelling, as follows:
90 days or more – loss of deposit
89-60 days or more – 25%
59-30 days – 50%
29 days or less – 100%
Refund Policy
From time to time, tours do not reach the minimum number of bookings necessary to make the trip viable. We reserve the right to cancel or alter a tour in these circumstances. If we cancel the tour or make substantial alterations, we will advise you at least 60 days before departure and will offer you alternative dates or a full refund.
Day 1 Tuesday 23 September. Afternoon check in is available at the stylish Intercontinental Hotel in Porto. Late afternoon we take a short walk to one of Porto’s best kept secrets. Feitoria (The Factory House) is a unique part of Porto’s story, a gentleman’s club for British port shippers handed over in perpetuity to the British Consulate in the early 19th century.
Then, after a brief walk to the riverfront, its time for dinner at Wine Box, a wonderful wine-themed restaurant near the river. There we will enjoy a range of northern Portuguese dishes and wines from regions we do not visit on the tour. D
Day 2. Wednesday 24 September We check out and head north to visit the charismatic Vasco Croft in his biodynamic Aphros winery in the heart of the Vinho Verde region. After a tasting and lunch there, head south to the dramatic scenery of the Douro.
Check in to the lovely Vintage House, overlooking the river at Pinhao for next 2 nights. Walk for early evening visit to the nearby wonderfully situated Quinta de la Rosa which produces mostly table wines but also some fine ports. Dinner in their lovely restaurant. B/L/D
Day 3. Thursday 25 September A great day in the Douro awaits! Starting with a morning cruise along the river in a traditional rabelo boat before enjoying a visit and tasting at one of the Douro Valley’s finest vineyards. Dow’s Quinta do Bomfim is the heart of some of the greatest Ports, having provided the main structure for Dow’s Vintages since it was acquired in 1896.
After this we then take a short but magnificent train ride to one of the region’s legendary locations, Quinta do Vesuvio. Lunch here is a privileged experience, before a train ride back to Pinhao. After freshening up at the hotel we leave for a tasting menu dinner at DOC, the best restaurant in the region. B/L/D
Day 4. Friday 26 September Morning visit and tasting at Wine & Soul one of the best wineries in the Douro, a producer of some fantastic award winning table wines. This innovative yet rustic winery was founded by Jorge Serôdio Borges and his wife Sandra Tavares da Silva,whose plan has been to showcase the traditional varieties and terroir of the Douro Valley on an international level.
From there head for a visit at Quinta do Vallado (one of the legendary Douro boys’ estates), followed by lunch. It was established in 1716, is one of the oldest and most famous "Quintas" in the Douro Valley. Their table wines have an excellent reputation but they also produce very good ports. It once belonged to the legendary Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, and still belongs to her descendants. After lunch we leave the Douro and head back to Porto for a two night stay in the 5 star Yeatman Hotel. Free evening. B/L
Day 5. Saturday 27 September Morning visit and tasting at the historic Taylors port lodge. Taylor's has been producing some of the finest fortified wines in Portugal for over three centuries. Known for its exceptional quality and distinct character, Taylors Port has a rich legacy that spans generations and has made it a beloved choice among wine connoisseurs and enthusiasts alike
Lunch and the afternoon are free before dinner in a private room of the Yeatman’s Orangery restaurant. The Yeatman’s restaurant is a 2* Michelin. B/D
Day 6. Sunday 28 September. After breakfast, end of tour.
