We have two powwows on our reservation in July:
Package 1: The Arlee Celebration (Early July)
About the Powwow: This is the oldest and one of the largest powwows on the reservation, with a focus on celebrating the nation's birthday and showcasing the Salish and Pend d'Oreille traditions. It's a large, multi-day event with a strong community feel.
Accommodations:
"Traditional" Camping: Camping is available on the Arlee Powwow Grounds, offering a fully immersive experience. Remember that this is a family-friendly, community space with rules against alcohol, drugs, and fireworks.
Hotel Stay: Stay in nearby Missoula for more comfort and amenities. It's a short, scenic drive to Arlee and we can pick you up.
Camp Ka Papa camping: Camping is available at our campground and we can provide transportation via a packaged price.
Activities:
Powwow Grounds Access: We will provide transportation to and fro.
Daily Schedule: Plan to attend the Grand Entries, and be sure to see the Fourth of July Parade.
Local Exploration: Browse the many vendor booths for handmade arts and crafts and try traditional foods.
Package 2: The Standing Arrow Powwow (Mid-July)
About the Powwow: Hosted by the Kootenai Culture Committee, this powwow is a vibrant celebration of Kootenai culture and heritage. It is known for its beautiful location near Flathead Lake.
Accommodations:
Camping: Camping is available at Camp Ka Papa or the Elmo powwow grounds and a great way to be a part of the celebration.
Hotel Stay: There are hotels and other accommodations in nearby towns like Polson or Kalispell. Staying near Flathead Lake also offers other recreational opportunities.
Activities:
Unique Events: While it shares the core elements of dancing and drumming, the Standing Arrow Powwow often features specific specials and competitions, such as a large drum and dance contest.
Scenic Views: Take advantage of the powwow's proximity to Flathead Lake for stunning views and other outdoor activities.
