Your first days in Calabria take you to places that most visitors never find. You will spend time on a family farm where olive oil has been made the same way for generations, sit down to lunch under the trees, and settle into your four-star hotel right on the Ionian Sea. The next day brings you into the hills, where a small group of young artisans is quietly bringing back one of Calabria's oldest crafts in a way that will make you wonder how you never knew this place existed.

By day three you are deep in the countryside, gathering ingredients in a small village before heading to a family farm where someone's grandmother puts you to work in the kitchen. You will make bread, set the table, and eat a meal that no restaurant could replicate. That is the kind of afternoon that stays with you long after you get home.

Pizzo Calabro is a small coastal town that has been doing two things better than anywhere else in Calabria for a very long time -- fresh tuna and the tartufo di Pizzo, a gelato truffle invented here that has never quite been replicated anywhere else. You will go behind the scenes to see how it is made before you eat one.

From there the tour moves south to Reggio Calabria. You will take a boat along the Violet Coast past the fishing village of Scilla, visit the Bronzi di Riace -- two Greek bronze statues pulled from the sea in 1972 that stopped the archaeology world in its tracks -- and spend your last full day walking through Pentedattilo, a town abandoned after an earthquake in 1783 that has stayed that way ever since.
