About this trip

Pumas and Birds of Patagonia is one of our most comprehensive wildlife programs, aimed to discover the rich biodiversity of the remote areas of southern Chile.

During trip we will have two full days (with four sessions) to look and photograph Patagonian Pumas, in the stunning area of Torres del Paine National Park and Estancia Laguna Amarga. In addition to that, we offer a very comprehensive birding itinerary, in order to see most of the Patagonian bird specialties: from King Penguins and Andean Condors to Magellanic Plover and Magellanic Woodpecker, among several other unique species.

On this week itinerary, we will cover a variety of productive birding habitats, including wind-swept steppes, alkaline lakes and lagoons, channels and fjords, subantarctic woodlands and dramatic mountain regions, all encompassing a fascinating cast of birds and mammals.

Besides the charismatic Puma, other mammals will be possible to observe and photograph during this trip, including Guanaco, Southern Huemul, Culpeo and Chilla Foxes, Large Hairy Armadillo, Hog-nosed Skunk, Commerson’s and Peale’s Dolphins, among others.

Join us in 2023, on this fascinating journey to the dazzling regions of Chilean Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego to discover its best wildlife, traveling in a small group and enjoying the leadership and skills of our experienced guides.

I brought a group of photographers to Torres del Paine and then to the Aysen region for a 16 day photography tour. Claudio, Susanne and the Far South team helped to make this a memorable experience for everyone. We had awesome photographic opportunities and the trip was a huge success from that standpoint. In addition we enjoyed all of our accommodations and meals (sometimes casual to stay on location). The trip was well planned and while it included a lot of driving in the Aysen, we were able to make stops along the way to refresh and to add to our collection of photographs. Claudio and Susanne took on all the driving responsibilities and did so with considerable care and thoughtfulness throughout the adventure. I have been bringing groups to Chile and Argentina since 2007 and have had the wonderful assistance of Far South Expeditions on all my trips. I couldn't be happier with their professional approach, attention to the smallest details, thoughtfulness and patience with regard to each guest, and adaptability should needs arise. They are a first class organization and I would give them my highest recommendation.

The trip met our expectations of seeing new bird species, landscapes, and pumas, as describe in our itinerary. We traveled as a couple with a single guide to various locations, using just 2 locations for lodging, which was more convenient than if we moved to different places frequently. We traveled by a comfortable 4wd vehicle. We would have preferred more time walking and hiking to see the birds. The guide had a broad background on all aspects of Chile. The only disappointment was the condor day; they flew over us, high, and did not land at the carcass in front of the blind. The food was good in Punta Arenas, and very good at the ranch. The views in every direction were beautiful and we are grateful for these memories.

The puma tracking with Far South was outstanding, exceeding our expectations. We had multiple encounters with several pumas, some within two meters of us. The mother carrying her young kitten was unbelievable. It couldn't have been better.

Many special memories of being in amazing natural beauty ... as well as learning about Patagonian wildlife. Fabulous traveling companions.

It was a great day when our group of four seniors met Jorge Valenzuela, the leader for our “Birding Patagonia & Tierra del Fuego” tour arranged by Far South Expeditions. Jorge’s skillful guiding led us to the great birding we anticipated and he took advantage of opportunities to include knowledge of wildlife, geology and photography of the natural Chilean world along the way. We saw stunning scenery while driving through varied ecosystems, enjoyed local cuisine and had a rich introduction to Chile throughout our tour. Along with our excellent driver, Jorge guided us on an outstanding tour. It was a wonderful and very fun time.
