This five-day Ramadan tour offers the opportunity to experience the month in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a Muslim-majority European country where Ramadan is lived openly in everyday public life.
Based primarily in Sarajevo, the trip is designed for UK-based young professionals who want to travel during Ramadan without committing to a long retreat or intensive religious programme. The focus is on shared iftars, guided site visits, and time spent together as a small group.
The itinerary is shaped around fasting hours, with lighter daytime activities and relaxed evenings. Alongside guided visits to key Islamic and cultural sites, there is space for personal prayer, reflection, and rest, without formal devotional schedules or pressure.
Travelling in a small group allows for a comfortable pace, simple coordination, and genuine shared moments, from breaking fast together to experiencing Sarajevo’s Ramadan evenings. This is a well-organised group journey during Ramadan that balances structure, flexibility, and cultural depth.
Ramadan in Bosnia is lived openly and collectively. As the sun sets, streets fill with light, cannon calls mark iftar, and families and friends gather in mosques, cafés, and public spaces. The month shapes the rhythm of daily life rather than sitting alongside it.
As evening approaches, Sarajevo takes on a distinct Ramadan atmosphere, with mosque lights, calls to prayer, and families gathering across the Old Town. Breaking fast together, walking through Sarajevo after sunset, and spending time in neighbourhoods where Ramadan is part of everyday life offers a perspective that feels both familiar and distinct within a European setting.
Guided visits provide context to Bosnia’s Islamic and cultural landscape, from Ottoman-era mosques to historic neighbourhoods that remain active parts of community life today. Between these moments, there is time to pause, observe, and experience the city at a natural pace during the month.
Rather than a structured programme, the experience is defined by presence. Being there during Ramadan, sharing meals, and moving through the city as it transitions from day to night.
Ramadan-aware pacing
The programme is shaped around fasting hours. Days are kept lighter, with guided visits scheduled at a comfortable pace, while evenings are left open for iftar, prayer, and experiencing Bosnia’s Ramadan atmosphere without rushing from place to place.
Small-group travel
With a limited group size, the experience remains personal and flexible. Shared meals and time together are easier to organise, and the group can move through sites and evenings calmly rather than as part of a large tour.
Comfort without complication
Staying at a centrally located 4★ Marriott hotel in Sarajevo provides comfort, reliable suhoor, and easy access to key areas of the city. Transport and entrance fees are arranged in advance so logistics do not interrupt the flow of the trip.
Guided context, not formal programmes
Guided visits focus on historical and cultural context, helping you better understand Bosnia’s Islamic heritage and contemporary life. Time is left open for personal prayer, mosque visits, and reflection, allowing each traveller to observe the month in a way that feels right for them.

An optional stop for desserts or tea follows, before returning to the hotel.
The day begins at a measured pace, mindful of fasting hours. We start with a visit to the Tunnel of Hope, offering essential context on Sarajevo’s recent history and the resilience of its people during the siege.
From there, we return to the city centre to explore Sarajevo’s Old Town (Baščaršija). Guided visits include key Islamic and cultural landmarks such as Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, Gazi Husrev-beg Madrasa, the Clock Tower, and surrounding historic streets that remain active centres of daily life during Ramadan. Time is allowed to walk through the Old Town, observe local rhythms, and pause for rest as needed.
In the late afternoon, there is time to attend muqabala after Asr for those who wish. As Maghrib approaches, the group gathers for a group iftar in Sarajevo’s Old City, followed by Taraweeh prayers. The evening remains unhurried, with optional desserts or tea afterwards, reflecting the relaxed pace of Ramadan nights in the city.
Today we travel south by private transport into Herzegovina, a region known for its natural landscapes and Ottoman heritage. The journey is paced to allow rest while fasting, with planned stops along the way.
Our first visit is to Blagaj Tekke, set at the source of the Buna River, offering insight into Bosnia’s spiritual and architectural history. We then continue to Konjic, with time to explore the town and its historic bridge, a key stop along historic trade routes.
By late afternoon, we arrive in Mostar, where we will visit the Old Town and view Stari Most. As Maghrib approaches, the group will break fast together in Mostar and experience the cannon firing marking iftar. The evening includes Taraweeh prayers, with time to experience the city after sunset before returning to Sarajevo later in the evening.
Today’s journey takes us to Travnik, a former Ottoman administrative centre. Guided visits include Travnik Fortressand key sites in the historic town centre, providing context on Travnik’s role in Bosnia’s political and religious history.
We then continue to Jajce, known for its historic old town and natural setting. Time is allocated to explore the area and understand its significance as a former royal and regional centre.
As sunset approaches, we return to Travnik, where the group will break fast together while witnessing the cannon firing from Travnik Fortress, a long-standing Ramadan tradition. The evening includes Taraweeh prayers in Travnik before the return journey to Sarajevo.
The final day is intentionally left flexible. Travellers may spend the morning and afternoon visiting mosques, engaging in personal prayer, reflecting, or spending time in Sarajevo’s Old Town. There will also be time to purchase Eid gifts and souvenirs.
For those who wish, optional activities are available, including rafting or a light hike, both planned with fasting and Ramadan timings in mind. These activities are entirely optional and can be arranged separately for interested travellers. Those who prefer a quieter day may remain in Sarajevo, visit additional mosques, or enjoy unstructured time before travel.
Later in the day, the group will transfer by private transport to Sarajevo International Airport for the return flight home.
