Come and join yoga teachers Jo Lewzey and Ale Piedra in this magical reawakening retreat to Costa Rica. Encantada Cottages is an exclusive and beautiful destination in Playa Esterillos, right by the ocean.
This fantastic retreat includes yoga classes, delicious meals, a fine selection of accommodations, transport to and from the airport and endless wonderful moments together.
The staff of Encantada will be fully dedicated to our group. The open-air restaurant invites you to explore authentic Costa Rican cuisine; each dish is meticulously prepared over a wood fire grill. We will practice yoga every day in the "rancho", surrounded by nature in front of the ocean. Our morning practice will be an alignment based class, focusing on different parts of the body throughout the week and the afternoon class will be a restorative practice bringing the body and mind to a calm, relaxed and nurtured state.
We will have plenty of time for reflection and connection with each other, spending time in sharing circles throughout the week. This is a really wonderful opportunity to get to know each other more deeply and build very special friendships.
Encantada offers a selection of diverse and fun activities for us to choose from; such as horse back riding, zip lining, surf lessons, boat and kayaking trips
We can also play some games together on the beach such as volley ball, badminton, boogie boarding and swimming. And they offer some indoor games for us the evenings.
To complete our time together we will share a very special fair well bonfire.
Jo creates a safe space for students to fully be themselves – a place where they can let go, become vulnerable, and at the same time experience their strengths and potential. Her class environment is like a living workshop where students can ask questions and learn something new in each class.
She teaches proper alignment in yoga poses and also hopes to teach students about yoga as a precious and invaluable healing practice of the body, mind, and heart and about how these tools can be used in aspects of our lives. She strives to instill in her students a trusting and healthy relationship with their bodies and relief from long held pain and injury.
Lastly, she hopes that they begin to witness greatness within themselves and feel stronger and more equipped to face life with love and integrity. Jo teaches an all levels class – everyone is welcome to join! As students continue to practice with her they’ll gradually build knowledge of the poses, strength, and endurance.
Her classes are not about being perfect or overly flexible in the poses – everyone is there to learn and grow together.
Ale teaches restorative yoga in a way that is accessible, knowledgeable and heartening.
Her classes feature a blend of self- soft tissue and joint release, breath work, and restorative poses in which the body is supported with props and held for extended periods of time.
She honors each person’s body as unique and as a wise sanctum that holds infinite regenerative resources. Her restorative yoga sequences are designed to bring the nervous system to a deep relaxation mode that eases the mind and body down to the cellular level. From this calmness, the body’s natural tendency to cleanse, heal, grow and build immunities becomes more accessible.
Ale believes that restorative yoga is a great resource to gently embrace different poses that often times people avoids thinking it will cause them pain or injury. As the body and mind learn to pause and develop awareness about different sensations and patterns, a new ability to let go of tension and build strength springs. Her desire is to encourage students to explore their own particularities and gain trust in the inherent resilience the body, mind and soul hold.
As her classes develop, inspirational and educational cues will invite you to dive into a loving journey of inner-reflection and self-care.
Restorative yoga is suitable for students of all levels.
Jo Lewzey has been teaching yoga since 2006, however In 2010 she met the teacher that changed everything for her, Maritza – a longtime yogi who started as an Iyengar teacher and moved over to Anusara. Maritza’s style focuses on alignment of the body within each pose, slow and precise movement, and a therapeutic approach to practice. Maritza also has over thirty years experience with Vipassana meditation. Jo studied with Maritza as a student for two years in her annual three-month-long Yoga immersion and then assisted in the training for three years, then took it again as a student in 2017 completing well over 600 hours of study.
Maritza’s teachings truly changed Jo from the inside out and completely changed her teaching.
“I feel so inspired by Maritza as she is someone who truly embodies the practice of yoga, she lives and breathes it and has taught me how to truly heal my body through yoga and come back to my mat over and over again with a constant desire to continually grow and stay open to life and all of its challenges.”
Jo also completed a 300-hour teacher-training with Noah Maze in Los Angeles. He teaches alignment based yoga, in-depth Asana sequencing, anatomy, and Hindu Mythology.
For Jo, yoga is a way to connect with herself on a deeper level. It is a way to quiet down the noise, soften and release the resistances in the body, learn how to focus the mind and find a deep well of calm and well being within, no matter what is going on outside. She loves teaching because it constantly asks her to be the best version of herself. She loves the class environment, sharing her heart and soul with an amazing group of people.
“The energy is so uplifting and it becomes this magical co-creative experience, and I leave feeling a huge high like surfing an amazing wave."
Ale is originally from Costa Rica where she grew up loving nature, animals and movement. There, she got her background in massage, strength training and physical therapy.
Her passion is to walk individuals through a journey of self-discovery and healing mediated by integrative health practices. The conviction leading her professional practice is that cultivating a mindful relationship with the body, mind and heart, the organism’s inherent restorative mechanisms can be potentiated.
In 2014, she moved with her husband and black Labrador to San Francisco, where she took some time off. During this period, she had the opportunity to take different health care volunteering positions, involving outpatient & inpatient PT, elder life programs, and animal assisted therapy for diverse populations and settings. She also completed several PT related continuing education courses and became very interested in integrative pain management contemporary research and techniques. Additionally, she engaged in various alternative health and personal growth workshops in the fields of dance, voice expression, meditation & mindfulness and somatic psychology.
Ale’s first encounter with yoga was in 2003, but it was until 2016 when she fully committed to it. She ended up at Jo Lewzey’s yoga class and she loved the way in which her teaching blends both a strong anatomical alignment foundation and a deep inner exploration component.
"Jo’s classes create a safe space that invites the body and mind to let go of all unnecessary holds and get stronger and healthier in a deeper way. Her loving and positive energy keeps allowing me to relate to my body and mind with courage, humility and compassion".
Her own healing path has allowed her to experience first hand the transformative power of yoga and meditation. This has been the inspiration for her great interest in bringing these medicinal disciplines into her professional practice. Hence, she decided to embark in a deep personal and professional skin change. She has been studying and practicing yoga under the guidance of Jo and Jo’s own mentor, Maritza, since then. Additionally, she is currently completing a yoga teacher training at NOAHMAZE institute.
" As Jo and Maritza guide me to cultivate focus, discipline, and balance between strength and softness of mind, body and soul in my mat, I learn how to apply these qualities in all other areas of my life. I get to live more freely and fully. I become more authentic. Their teachings are giving me so much, that I feel deeply inspired to share these gifts with the world".
Ale is super excited and forever grateful for the opportunity to teach the restorative yoga portion of this amazing retreat.
