Retreat Location

Barbarenas is located in Brisas de Zicatela or “La Punta," Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico, 15 minutes from the Puerto Escondido International airport. (Airport code: PXM)

Barbarenas is a sustainable retreat center built in La Punta, Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. The hand-crafted, naturally-built eco-cabañas are surrounded by a large tropical flora and fauna garden, creating a peaceful oasis where you and your group can harmonize with nature. All building materials were sourced locally and they provide long term local employment and living wages for employees. Barbarenas is integrated into the local community and the owners, staff and management all live onsite or in the local area. The retreat center is 100% family and community funded and they have personal relationships with all of their investors. Barbarenas believes in transparent business practices, environmental ecology, supporting the local economy and helping revive traditional Oaxacan culture.

They are a 10-minute walk from the beach. Puerto is surrounded by miles of beautiful sandy beaches along the Pacific ocean. The beach close to Barbarenas is called “La Punta” and is an internationally acclaimed surf spot. There are other coves and beaches for swimming if the waves are big during the season. The water is warm (but not too warm) all year round, and while Pacific currents can be strong, they do not have issues with algae or other pollution issues found on the Caribbean side.

Barbarenas retreat center is located slightly above the town. However, they are not an off-grid secluded center and do have neighbours that can be heard occasionally. Which means there is the occasional local noise including cars, chickens, and construction. They are bordered only by one small dirt road with minimal through traffic, there is no road access on the other 3 sides of the property. They are close enough to town for participants to walk down and engage in local Mexican culture or to buy necessities, gifts, or drinks.

Accommodations

You will be sleeping in one of four eco-cabanas on the property. The rooms are configured to have all single beds. In addition, each cabanas has a private, rooftop “nook” with a full bed under traditional palapa thatch style roofing. The cabanas have private terraces with ocean views and ensuite bathrooms. These are available at an extra charge.

Getting There

If you are coming from the United States, it is advised to come through Mexico City as flights are more frequent. You can, however, also fly through Oaxaca, although it will be a longer trip.

Plan to arrive before 2pm on May 14, 2023 if possible. Check in is at 3pm and the Welcome Circle will begin at 4pm.
