Reconnection through Meditation and Yoga: a Spring Equinox retreat in Cabarete, Dominican Republic is a BIPOC only wellness experience co-created by Michi Cabrera and Moraima Capellán Pichardo. We will practice meditation everyday with plenty of opportunities to write and move our bodies. In addition to our “stretch and journal” workshops and our yoga classes, we will meet with Cabarete local and world-renown professional surfer and kite-surfer Luciano Gonzalez to surf at Encuentro Beach and paddleboard both at the river in La Boca and at Lagoon located at Kibayo, our home for the week. Breakfast and dinner is included at Kibayo, and we will have 3 bonfires to get to know each other. We will also learn how to cook a plant-based Afro-Dominican meal, and how to dance bachata. This retreat was designed for you to reconnect with yourself and experience our beautiful motherland with our rich Dominican gastronomy and culture. You will leave feeling balanced, nourished and with tools to handle whatever comes next in life.

Born in the Dominican Republic, raised in New York City, Moraima is a certified yoga instructor (500 RYT), a freelance writer and photographer and community organizer. Based in Cabarete, she is also a co-founder and director of Cabarete Sostenible, a grassroots non-profit focused on food sovereignty in the north coast of the Dominican Republic.
Her yoga professional training was focused on the anatomy of the Asana practice, with a focus on hands-on adjustments and restorative yoga. Like many Yoga students, Moraima arrived at her mat following a major surgery. Open-heart surgery and a lifetime of congenital heart disease left her longing for a way to rejuvenate and connect with her innermost self. Yoga was the answer to her needs. Moraima is passionate about responsible community tourism and providing resources the historically excluded. Her classes tend to be at a slower pace with a focus on alignment and moving with intention.
Michi Cabrera is a Puerto Rican-Dominican New Yorker, writer and wellness practitioner. She is a certified yoga teacher (200 Hour YT), paddleboard instructor and reiki practitioner. Her poetry and essays explore themes of love, travel, spirituality, and kinship.
Michi (pronounced Mickey) has taught yoga and meditation since 2015, and currently offers private reiki sessions and meditation coaching. She lives in the Bronx and has one plant. Her favorite paddleboarding spots in the world are in Condado Lagoon in Puerto Rico and La Boca, Dominican Republic.
Michi had major knee reconstruction surgery in 2022 and is eager to return to the mat. Her meditation practice has been absolutely crucial in her recovery.
