From the Andes to the Cloud Forest

Departure from Quito 2,800 msl:

Pick-up from at 3:45 a.m. Also, the pick-up would be coordinated from the Quito airport. 2,5-hour drive approximately to the Andean Cloud Forest Reserve (1,600msl). While we prepare our equipment, we will have a snack. Short walk to the Lek to observe the Andean Cock the Rock, one of the icon in the region.

Andean Cock of the Rock lek:

We will always be accompanied by our host who is a local guide within the reserve. Short drive to the see the Yellow-breasted Antpitta. Like most antpittas (who walks on stilts), very difficult to see; occasionally hops along a forest trail. Giant Antpitta, it is a large antpitta found out in this reserve. Chestnut-crowned Antpitta, Moustached, Ochre-breasted and Yellow-breasted, along with Rufous-breasted Antthrush. It's time for a break and we continue to the restaurant of the refuge to have a country breakfast made with plantains along with a delicious empanada with cheese.

Antpittas and others species:

Besides, can be seen in the tour: Violet-tailed Sylph, Empress Brilliant, Velvet-purple Coronet, Western Emerald, Golden-headed Quetzal, Red-headed and Toucan Barbets (upper forest), Crimson-rumped Toucanet, Plate-billed Mountain-toucan, Narino Tapaculo, Orange-breasted Fruiteater, Olivaceous Piha (seldom), Golden-winged Manakin and Black-chinned Mountain-tanager. In addition, good opportunity to watch Dark-backed Wood-quail, Lyre-tailed Nightjar and Scaled Fruiteater.

Hummingbird sanctuary:

At the end of our observation in this natural reserve, we will continue back and on the way, we are able to visit the hummingbird sanctuary. More quiet, we can observe other species of hummingbirds and tanagers that perhaps escaped us in the previous reserve (1,400msl). Back to Quito and drop-off in your hotel.
