About this trip

I am a lover of education, travel, nature, history, community, and yoga. As an avid traveler, it is difficult for me to just go to the beach. I know that there are people who love doing that, but I need just a bit more. In Costa Rica, one has the opportunity to lounge at the beach, dip one's toes in Caribbean OR Pacific waters, see monkeys, play with sloths, marvel at manatees, zip-line, raft rapids, eat the best mangos you've ever had (seriously), drink passionfruit juice every day, learn about the history and culture of Central America, and interact with the indigenous Bri Bri community. AND you can do all of this in an eco-friendly way. This retreat is designed for the person who doesn't want to be cloistered in a resort for a week, but would like the option to engage in a culturally meaningful way  while enjoying a blissful yoga retreat. Choose your adventure.

About Puerto Viejo

Puerto Viejo is in the Limón Province on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. It is south and east of San José, and close to neighboring country, Panama. Playa Chiquita is located 3.7m / 6 km south of Puerto Viejo, and is the secluded beach area where we will be staying at the Tierra de Sueños Retreat Wellness & Center. Because of its location, one can enjoy absolute respite in Playa Chiquita or take a 10 minute taxi ride to lively Puerto Viejo. Check out Tierra de Sueños and Playa Chiquita!

What to See and Do

You will not be sequestered at the retreat center so that you may enjoy all that this Costa Rican area has to offer. Excursions are optional and highly encouraged!

(Guided excursions range from $40-90 and are arranged directly with the excursions organizers.)

Popular activities include:

  • White water rafting
  • Canopy Tours (zip-lining)
  • Surfing
  • Hiking
  • Snorkeling / Diving
  • Horseback Riding
  • Animal engagement at the animal rescue center & turtle encounter areas
  • Bike riding
  • Kayaking
  • Cultural visits with the Bribri

Personally, I do not believe any trip to Puerto Viejo is complete unless you've biked all around. You can rent a bike for $8/day on Playa Chiquita, or head to PV proper and rent a bike there. This is a very laid back part of the country, so expect greetings of  "Pura Vida!" and a lifestyle that sways to a reggae beat.

My mama always said to say something nice or nothing at all...this retreat would be hard pressed to find something to say nothing on. It was such a fantastic experience; everything was thoughtfully taken care of ahead of time, I never felt uninformed, and the facilities Tamika chose to use for the retreat were magical. Her yoga instructions were spot on and her assistant matched her energy and purpose to a T. All the workshops were engaging, informative, and a safe place to inquire in. I can definitely say this was my favorite retreat I’ve been on so far in my life and I’ve been on my fair share of them in the past. I look forward to attending more Ashé Yoga retreats in the future.
I had a lovely 8 days with you in Peru! Thank you for organizing our days with plenty of yoga and activities!
Magical experience! This trip was beyond anything I could have imagined in all of the best possible ways! The venue, Yoga Mandala is a piece of paradise surrounded by the beauty and majesty of the Sacred valley. Accommodations were beautiful and so comfortable, and the vegetarian meals were fresh and so delicious! This beautiful group of people I was privileged to spend the week with felt like family in a very short time, and made the trip all the more enjoyable. Our itinerary was brilliantly planned, offering exciting adventures exploring our host country and spiritual ceremonies performed by local Shamans, balanced with enough free time to nurture our souls, relax, journal, and even venture out on adventures of our own devising. My eternal gratitude to Tamika for creating this heavenly, soul renewing experience. Can't wait for the next one!
Facilitated by two incredible teachers, we learned yogic philosophy, alignment cues and got to experience many different aspects of yoga from Nidra to Ashtanga; somatic movement to singing bowls. I had some many life-affirming experiences in a gorgeous setting with yoga experts. The first time I saw the mountains of the Amazon, I cried they were so beautiful. This country was filled with magical moments of color and connection. Grateful for the strength I got to see in myself again because of this trip.
