About this trip

Ridge Junction Overlook is one of the best spots in the Blue Ridge to enjoy the fall migration of warblers and other passerines. Over the past few years there have been over 25 species of warblers seen at this spot, including Blackburnian, Magnolia, Mourning, Cerulean, Chestnut-sided, Hooded, Black-and-white, Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green…the list is endless. We’ve even had Kirtland’s Warbler here 2 out of the past 3 years, and in 2018 one hung around for about 10 days! Other species include Broad-winged and Sharp-shinned Hawks, Swainson’s, Wood, Gray-cheeked, Hermit and even Bicknell’s Thrushes, Red-eyed, Blue-headed and Philadelphia Vireos, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Scarlet Tanager and many more. This is also one of the most reliable spots in the mountains for Red Crossbills. We will enjoy the passage of birds through the gap and also work on the identification of those “confusing fall warblers!” Join us for a relaxing morning enjoying fall migration in the Blue Ridge.

The class was awesome. Keith’s knowledge and ability to simplify sparrows was very helpful. I hope he teaches more birding classes in the future.

Very helpful. I've always been terrible identifying sparrows. This presentation offered a logical way to think about the similarities and differences. Looking forward to trying it out on some live examples.

Very informative talk, also entertaining. I especially appreciated the comparisons between similar species.

This was a fun way to become familiar with the guides, the participants, and the way Ventures domestic trips are run. Of course the photos of birds were especially appreciated. Certainly makes me want to join a trip - though not in the cold climates!
