      Belize

Belize has become a destination for adventure-seekers of all kinds. On land, you can hike, canoe, kayak, cave, bird and explore ruins. At sea, the diving steals the show. The Belize Barrier Reef, part of the second largest barrier reef system in the world, is home to hundreds of species of fish and corals. This is the perfect destination for new or experienced divers!

      The Diving

Minimum dive certification/experience: PADI Open Water Diver can be completed on trip. PADI Enriched Air/Nitrox certification strongly recommended. Deep Diver recommended for Blue Hole dive.

Belize is a wall diver's paradise. Sheer walls like Painted Wall, Half Moon Caye Wall and Quebrada are adorned with huge crimson gorgonians and giant orange elephant ear sponges. Moray eels, spiny lobsters and tiny arrow crabs hide in every crack, crevice, cave and tunnels of these beautiful coral formations. The mystical Blue Hole, a collapsed freshwater cave system is approximately 1000 feet across and over 400 feet deep. The Blue Hole was made famous by ocean pioneer Jacques-Yves Cousteau who declared it one of the Top Ten Dive Sites in the World.

Every Saturday at 6 pm, the boat casts off from the Radisson Ft. George dock, located in the heart of downtown Belize City for a week of hassle-free diving. Diving begins Sunday morning and ends Friday before lunch when we return to port. Sunday through Thursday there is unlimited diving throughout the day and a night dive each evening.  Friday a half day of diving is offered.

Water temperature averages around 80 F degrees, so a 3mm wetsuit is recommended. All dives are from the yacht although a 15 ft tender is available to take guests for optional shore excursions (1-2) during the week.

The Blue Planet trip to Cozumel was dream come true! The drift diving was fantastic, with sharks, turtles, and healthy reefs with huge sponges, and a great crew leading the boat dives (with snacks!). The dive shop we used, Dive Paradise, was right across from the hotel and had convenient freshwater dunk tanks and lockers to store gear between dives and overnight. The shore diving right there was a great opportunity for impromptu "one more dive" moments. The trip leader Anthony also organized optional excursions, including blackwater diving, coral reef restoration (where we able to clean and plant new corals), and the NOT TO BE MISSED baby-turtle nest excursion, where we rescued 149 baby turtles (but who's counting??) with local volunteers and coaxed them down the beach into the ocean. And by the end of the trip we had three new Open Water certified divers and two new Advanced Open Water Divers. Can't wait for the next one!

Had an excellent time with the Blue Planet crew, and earned my Advanced Open Water certification during the trip. Friendly staff, patient and accommodating instructors (thanks Michael!), and comfortable hotel accommodations. The dive shop we used took us to some outstanding sites, and were knowledgeable about the ecosystem; the dive masters showed a great deal of dedication to the natural environment, and I learned a great deal from both Lobo and Lorena. The boat crew was professional and very helpful to the passengers. All round excellent trip, I will be attending again!

Amazing second trip with Blue Planet Scuba! Bonaire is a unique adventure, whether we dove off the boats, or from the shore. I hope to do it again. As someone who'd been certified in scuba for about a year, and had done only a few dives at Lake Phoenix over the summer, this was a big step up in terms of experience. Andrea and Travis were both excellent instructors. I took the Advanced Opened Water course on the trip, and while that was good, I feel like what really advanced my skills was the variety of challenging experiences Bonaire had to offer, and the generally excellent divers I had the opportunity to team up with both on training dives and when left to our own devices, rolling around the desert in our little Taliban trucks. The East Coast Dives excursion was amazing, and challenged my bravery as much as much as my dive skills. While we didn't get to witness coral spawning due to a jellyfish hazard, the bioluminescent ostracod dive was absolutely magical, and the night dives in general were wonderful. All in all, a wonderful learning opportunity for me, and a challenging adventure. Thank you for the opportunity.
