About this trip

Imagine lowering your kayak into one of five 66 million year old basalt canyons, getting pumped to run the Siete Tazas (Seven Teacups), a section of the Rio Claro known for its perfectly smooth walls and 7 amazing drops into deep pools.

This is just one of the many highlights to expect from the Claro Plus Los Quenes Trip with Pucon Kayak Retreat. With world class extreme kayak racer Lucas Varas and pro kayak instructor Boyd Lucas (Clean Line Kayaking), you’ll get to explore these incredible canyons as you push yourself to improve your skills as a kayaker. This all-inclusive trip has the highest level of instruction, excellent lodging near the Rio Claro and of course, some of the best waterfalls in Chile.

There are seventy plus clean waterfalls for advanced and expert kayakers throughout the anomaly earth melt basalt canyons of the Rio Claro. Few people will ever get to see these canyons, much less explore by dropping off them in a kayak!

The waterfalling action commences with the second easiest class III+ assessment section, the Siete Tazas section. The Siete Tazas are perfectly formed waterfalls dropping into a teacup pool. Lower your kayak down into an ancient basalt chasm, GoPro check, game time. The earthen crack has been polished, milled and carved by glacial and volcanic activity to make perfect banking waterfalls.

Kayakers will explore up to five Claro canyons depending on your skills and mindset. The most famous to kayakers is the iconic Garganta del Diablo (or “Throat of the Devil”) curling 20 foot to another 20 foot drop. It’s notorious for the 180-degree two-tiered waterfall. Or not… we’ll help you assess if you are ready or prefer the milder sections.

Plus Los Quenes - Rios Claro and Teno

Prior to your Claro experience we warm up and access kayakers on the nearby Claro and Teno sections in the Andean town of Los Quenes. The goal is to access and prep for the Claro canyons in a safe environment. Also, realize that no one kayaks the Claro canyons for more than two to three days due to the 70+ waterfall impacts. Part of our safety protocol is to pace the trip with proper safety while giving kayakers all they can eat within the canyons. Los Quenes provides an added second destination and cultural experience.
