This a very busy central area full of markets, cafes, and shops. We will later on check into our hotel and give you a few hours to rest. Your hotel overlooks the Acropolis. Later we will go for a nice dinner in the Plaka region of Athens.
We start our day early with an early visit to Acropolis and other area attractions including the theater. We will then visit the Acropolis museum. Lunch will be at the museum after the museum visit. From here we depart Athens for the beautiful Mountain village of Arachova. We chose Arachova for its small village charm, but many good shops and restaurants, also because of it´s proximity to Ancient Delphi which we will visit the next morning. Here we will arrive around 1700, check into our hotel, and walk around the village. Dinner and after dinner nice night cap and then back to the hotel. ( car time 2.5 hours )
We will check out of the hotel and have a 20 minute ride to Delphi. We will tour Dephi including the temple of Apollo and the ancient Stadium. This tour lasts approximately 3 hours. We will have a nice lunch overlooking Delphi after the visit, and then we will depart for our next destination Nicopolis which was the capital city of the Roman province of Epirus Vetus in the year 29BC. Then visit Necromanteion where the ancient temple is dedicated to Hades and Persephone. It is here that the door to Hades and the underworld is located. We then head to Ioaninna where we will spend the next night. Ioaninna is located at the foot of the Zagochoria mountain region, it is famous for metal work and is also located on a beautiful lake. ( Kamares or Stoes Hotel ) ( 4 hours car ride )
We will begin the day touring the Old Castle in Ioninna and then visit the Silversmith museum. After the museum we will have a nice café break or light lunch with some free time in Ioninna to do some shopping or window shopping, or people watching. From here we will go to visit the charming town of Metsovo, where we will stop at a local vineyard for a wine tasting with cheese and snacks. Later we will have a walk around charming Metsovo before departing for Meteora where we will be staying the night. ( 1.5 hour car ride )
Meteora houses many interesting monasteries in this beautiful landscape. We will spend the morning visiting a couple of the monasteries. Meteora means suspended in air. From Meteora we will head into the town of Litochoro for lunch and a special music visit to meet instrument makers of Greek musical instruments and a little music with some food. After our visit meeting locals we will continue up to Thessaloniki the capital of the Greek region of Macedonia. ( 3 hours in car )
The day will be spent in Thessaloniki with a lot to see including the Byzantine Museum and the Archaeological Museum, some churches from the Byzantine time. Thessaloniki also has a beautiful seaside where it is nice to have a walk and visit some of the many restaurants and cafes.
After breakfast we are off to the airport where we will catch our 1 hour flight to the island of Crete. We will be staying the next 3 days on the Island of Crete. On Crete we will be renting a villa for the 3 nights so that there will be a combination of eating out and also getting fresh groceries in open markets and letting Nik cook a couple of meals. During our stay on Crete we will visit both Heraklion ( the capital ) and also the more laid back Chania. We will visit some beaches, some olive groves with olive oil tasting and also vineyards with wine tasting.
