ARUSHA CITY OVERVIEW:

Arusha is Located in north eastern Tanzania, Arusha is the capital of the Arusha Region. The city is situated under the towering giant Mount Meru, and Mount Kilimanjaro is just 82.6km away. Arusha was first settled in the 1830s by maasaitribe in history. According to their oral history, the Maasaioriginated from the lower Nile valley north of Lake Turkana (Northwest Kenya) and began migrating south around the 15th century. They arrived to a long land mass, stretching from what is now northern Kenya to central Tanzania between the 17th and late 18th century.

Arusha – Tarangire National park

After breakfast in Arusha and following 3 hours 8 min (139.7 km), we will arrive at Tarangire National Park. In this region, Hemingway often went on big game hunting safaris. After the formation of the national parks in 1970, they turned the seasonal marshes and the endless savannah that one sees today into, once again, profitable hunting grounds. Today however, cameras thankfully have replaced the elephant guns. Tarangire National Park has the highest density of elephants in North Tanzania and you can view these animals all year round, in which the herds often can reach an impressive number of 300 animals. The Tarangire River has water all year round also and during the dry season, between July and October, many animals from the surrounding areas come to the river for drinking. If you visit the park during the dry season, you will witness an unforgettable natural wonder as you can observe wonderful creatures such as lions, giraffes, buffaloes, wildebeests and zebras as well as various types of antelopes and gazelles and with a little luck, you can also spot a python! This area is also a haven for bird watchers during the dry season, with over 550 different species including the Maasai Ostrich -the world largest bird. Around lunchtime, you will stop at a suitable picnic place before the afternoon is dedicated to more wildlife watching.

Tarangire National Park is a great place to:

Get out your bird book - you will not be disappointed

Take a stroll with an interpretive guide

Sit back let the prolific wildlife come to you

Enjoy lunch by the Tarangire National park River where you can relax and watch the world go by.

We will head to the central park area, known as the Seronera area, one of the richest wildlife habitats in the park. The Seronera River provides a valuable water source to this area of the park and attracts wildlife well represented by most of the Serengeti species.

Serengeti National Park is a great place to:

Witness one of the most amazing natural phenomena as a million wildebeest in 40km long columns undertake their 1000km long annual migration through the Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park - Ngorongoro Conservation Area

After breakfast, depart to Ngorongoro Conservation Area and stop over at Olduvai Gorge which boasts history dating back to the dawn of time. It was here that the anthropologists, Drs. Lois and Mary Leakey discovered the skulls of Nutcracker Man and Handy Man, both very significant links in the chain of human evolution.

OLDUVAI GORGE OVERVIEW:

The Olduvai Gorge is a remarkable archaeological site in East Africa and perhaps in the world. It was officially recognized as a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Exposed within the sides of the gorge is a remarkably rich chronicle of human ancestry and the evolution of the Serengeti National park ecosystem.

It was here that Mary and Louis Leakey, over the course of more than 30 years of backbreaking work, unearthed the first well-dated fossils and artifacts of some of our earliest human ancestors.

Their discoveries include the famous Zinjanthropus(Australopithecus boisei) skull, as well as remains of  Homo habilis, the presumed maker of the numerous early stone tools found in deposits ranging in age from 1.6 to 1.8  million years ago, and Homo erectus, the larger- bodied and larger- brained hominin that preceded the earliest modern humans (Homo sapiens.

The Ngorongoro Crater is undoubtedly the best place in Tanzania to view black rhinos as well as large prides of lions that include magnificent black-manned males. It is also home to huge herds of wildebeest and zebra and many other plains game, such as Thomson’s gazelle. An alkaline lake on the floor of the Crater provides a habitat for colorful flamingos and a variety of other water birds. Massive bull elephants feed in the swamps, some adorned with enormous tusks.

Maasai Village cultural Farewell Experience - Arusha

Maasai Village cultural visit after breakfast: Immerse yourself in authentic Maasai culture as you visit a traditional village, accompanied by an English-speaking guide who lives there himself.

Find yourself in the midst of the daily hustle and bustle of local life as you witness the daily rituals of the Maasai. Once you have drunk your fill of this authentic cultural experience, you can choose to browse through the Maasai Craft Centre and purchase artifacts made by the people you encountered. All proceeds from this go directly to the community.

The Maasai Living a semi-nomadic lifestyle, the Maasai tribe has modernized in some ways but still adheres to many aspects of their traditional culture. Established as fierce warriors, their lively cultural dance, vibrant clothing and beautifully crafted handiwork are recognized worldwide.

The Maasai used to move nomadically with their herds to abundant lush pastures but these days they have built permanent huts or bomas and prefer to stay in one place. They are pastoralists and cattle is essential to their way of life. A man’s success is measured by the number of cattle and offspring he has. As great a status and show of wealth the cattle are, they are also a vital food source. This glimpse of authentic Maasaiculture is a fascinating experience of an ancient way of life that still flourishes today.
