About this trip
The Rolwaling Gaurishankar trek and pilgrimage is a remote and spiritually profound journey into one of the Himalaya’s most storied landscapes. Tucked beneath the twin peaks of Mount Gaurishankar ($7,134)—revered as Tsheringma, the Mother Goddess of Longevity—this valley is much more than a trekking destination. Since the 8th century, Rolwaling has been recognized in sacred texts as a Beyul—a "hidden valley" or terrestrial paradise.
For over a millennium, it has served as a sanctuary for meditative traditions, where practitioners have sought solitude in its high caves and glacial shadows, preserving a culture of silence and sanctity that remains palpable today. In the 1970s, it served as a primary inspiration for the Deep Ecology movement, championed by the Norwegian philosopher Arne Naess and his colleagues. This movement was a direct response to the commercialization of the mountains, cementing Rolwaling as a symbol of ecological integrity.
This is more than a trek—it is a pilgrimage through time, offering a rare encounter with a valley that has remained a stronghold for both ancient meditative traditions and the radical protection of the natural world.
